quote:At least they are doubling speeds up to about 10% of what they should be for the price!
Meanwhile, Cox just upped my bill another $4.

Chattanooga was the first to do it in the country, he should of did the announcement there. We are the gig city.
I get gigabit for $70 with nothing bundled, which is the same price as Google's. It's amazing.

No one has said "what do I do with 1Gbps" yet?

Not really about what you can do with it. Essentially, 1Gbps internet means the bottleneck is no longer the ISP.

It's a leap on the same scale as dialup to "first-gen" broadband, and we sure as shite found things to do with that.
It's a leap on the same scale as "first-gen" broadband to our current broadband, and we sure as shite found things to do with that.
It's a leap we are overdue for, and one the rest of the world is beating us at. And yeah, they sure as shite found things to do with it.
Web pages keep getting heavier and heavier. The quality of streaming video keeps getting higher and higher. We keep buying more and more devices that are capable of producing larger and larger photos and videos that we want to share more and more. Everything is bigger and there's more of it every day.
It wouldn't take you long to figure out what to do with 1Gbps. Hell, after 10 minutes of web browsing with it, I bet going back to 50mbps would be agonizing.

100 down here with Virgin is around 45 bucks a month if that.

I am the last person to be a cheerleader for government intervention, but I believe this is the only way to get companies to do right for their customers, especially outside of cities. They are all too willing to charge premium prices for 1.5mb connections knowing that between that and nothing, people will pay them.
When there is no competition to make companies be competitive, all that's really left is for the government to act on behalf of consumers.
Where I live I am actually lucky to have 10mbs. 1.5mb is rampant and people are getting more and more upset about it and many people are calling CenturyLink. CenturyLink basically tells them they have no plans to increase speeds in the near future and they can go pound sand.

This.
Remember a few years ago when AT&T wanted to buy T-Mobile? The DOJ and FCC shut that down with relative celerity. Now, T-Mobile is thriving and is moving the entire wirelesss industry forward.

And I thank them for it. TMobile is making the ATT's of the world do better. (Rollover data? What an absurd idea, until TMobile does it) That is just the most recent example.
ETA: And, the only reason Cox is upping speeds around here is because of LUSFiber.
