Obama to push for cheaper, speedier broadband in the US

President Obama today outlined an upcoming executive action to increase US broadband speeds and reduce its cost, something he intends to announce at a speech tomorrow in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and again in his sixth State of the Union address next week.
In order to do that, The White House today said that it plans to file a letter with the Federal Communications Commission to end restrictions in 19 states that it believes are holding back broadband advances.

In a preview of the initiative, Obama pointed to Cedar Falls as a prime example of the inequality of broadband service among US cities when compared to international counterparts. It ranks on par with download speeds in cities like Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Paris. By comparison, he said, cities like Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco come up short.

The FCC can open the floodgates tomorrow if they give google access to the poles and conduits that cable and telephone enjoy. Good move on Obama's part.

Alot has to do with infrastructure. and who owns it.
BT owns it all here it here. If you want fiber and there is no line. Regardless of who you choose for your ISP, BT will dig one up for you.
You can get fast internet but its going to be absurdly expensive in the states.
While here those same speeds are way cheaper.
Getting just almost 20 down is basically free here.

What this translates is that he is going to make it more profitable for the ISPs. I have great broadband speeds through Comcast, but you're delusional if you think they are going to lower their prices because of any of these changes.

I don't think you understand what this is about. ISPs have successfully lobbied in many states to get laws on the books that prevent municipalities from creating their own broadband networks. In other words, ISPs have basically written their own laws that ensure high profitability for themselves. Obama is pushing to get rid of these laws and allow municipalities in all states to build their own networks. Also, he is pushing to allow pole access to more companies, eliminating a major hurdle for companies like Google to come in and compete in most markets.
This is all about making the currently non-competitive broadband market much more competitive. I'm not delusional.

I admittedly didn't read the article. If what you laid out below is accurate then good, maybe it will at least provide better options than Comcast/Cox.

So are they eliminating laws or is the govt subsidizing?

They aren't doing anything, yet. I think we're just in the "I think you should do this" phase. The main thing for me would be the elimination of laws that tie the hands of municipalities. To tell a city that it can't build its own infrastructure is absurd. As for grants and subsidies... I guess part of his plan is to either help build the networks or help people pay for service, or both, I'm not sure. I don't know enough about that to know whether that would be "fair" to existing ISPs, but I think they got their fair share of taxpayer help in building out their networks.

So is this the maximum speed possible per subscriber? How did they arrive at these figures? 1000Mbps??
Posted on 1/14/15 at 1:22 pm to tigerpawl
quote:Those are the highest speeds available in those cities. Cedar Falls and Chattanooga have municipal gigabit, Kansas City has Google Fiber, and I'm not sure about the others. But the majority of the country can't get anything faster than 25 or 50mbps. The point is we could easily have many more cities with gigabit internet if the ISPs had some competition.

I'm pretty sure Japan and Korea are pushing out 2gb/s speeds now

I mean, I have 60 Mbps and I pay $50/month and im pretty happy with that and dont see a need for faster internet. I can stream shite on like 5 different devices at the same time with the highest quality.

People in Japan and South Korea pay $20-$30 per month for fastest internet in the world. We pay $60 for slow, basic broadband because of greed. We should really pay half of that.

First of all, you know how technology works, don't you?
Also, congratulations, you have faster internet and pay less money than 90% of the country.
