Note 4 5.1.1 is finally freaking here!

And it's huge. 693 MB. I have it on top of my nighthawk running at 100 Mbps down on the 5Ghz channel and it is taking forever! Good luck to peeps with lower than that
Hopefully it fixes stuff until Marshmallow comes out.

Was there no other way to get it sooner? Serious question, because with the Nexus 6 being my first Android phone, I've enjoyed having access to the latest updates immediately, or whenever I feel like flashing a ROM. It makes me reluctant to try a phone that's under lockdown by Samsung or whomever.
Side rant: all these phones with proprietary skins and delayed updates are sure not helping fragmentation. Seems like a lot of app developers are not clamoring to make their apps necessarily compatible with the next version of Android since adoption takes so long. Almost a year later, and not even a quarter of the Android population is on Lollipop, let alone the latest version of it (not necessarily by choice, since it doesn't seem to play well with phones older than a couple years).
But damn...
With all the hardware combinations and flavors of Android to accommodate, it's a wonder Android apps work as well as they do.

AT&T Note 4 has no permanent root. We could not flash a new ROM. I didn't know that when I got it otherwise I wouldn't have gotten it.

While I got your attention in here, can you pop into this thread and see if you can help me? LINK

I've had this on Sprint for a while now.

Avoid Samsung phones from AT&T and Verizon like the plague. Those are probably the most locked down phones on Android now and have been for the last couple years.

So I'm currently using my Verizon Note 4 on AT&T...
I will have to wait until Verizon gets around to releasing their update right?

I'm at about 55% downloading.

Oh lawd. I had to download it twice because of lack of space. Second time was much faster
Posted on 10/12/15 at 10:25 am to Hu_Flung_Pu
It downloaded successfully, but gave me an error trying to install, now it says I have to download again, and must wait 24 hours.

Change the date/time on your phone to manual, go up a date and try again.

What do service providers have to gain when they control updates to phone software?
Posted on 10/12/15 at 11:49 am to Solicitor
Probably so people wont constantly ping their network when checking.
Posted on 10/12/15 at 11:54 am to Hu_Flung_Pu
So they won't push updates for weeks to months? Seems legit.

I'm just having a hard time understanding why some phones are just getting a 5.X.X update, while a whole new operating system is already being installed on others. Mind boggling.

It's because Samsung slacked and pretty much abandoned the Note 4. They released the Note 5 way earlier than normal and stopped updating their other phones. After Samsung puts their take of the update on, AT&T is also one of the slowest to place their bloatware on. This is why I am done with Samsung phones and will only get Nexus or something with a good track record of updating their devices. Also, will look intensely at every phone and see if it could be rooted.

Changed the date and will try again, it's downloading.
I too, think I will move away from Samsung to something else for this same reason.

Phone with root and pure Android is a must. How you people continue to buy Samsung garbage is mind boggling.
