The Apple Store has Parallels for sale for $80.

Is this the best option for a Mac that will have to run some Windows programs occasionally?

School related...

Have been running it for over a year. No problems. Best of both worlds. Great form factor of Mac and can run all the work related Windows programs. I think I paid about $50 direct from the Parallels site.

I've been running for a few months and migration process was pretty straight forward. I even updated to Windows 10 through parallels. It does get a little buggy every now and then, but that is mostly related to available resource issue. A simple reboot of Windows usually solves it.

Me, either.

It's for my daughter. She has been on the Mac platform forever, but one of her classes is requiring Windows capability.

I control all the women in my life, except her.

You can't run Microsoft Projects on a Mac, of which is needed in my field.

VMware fusion. Parallels is too buggy.

Agreed. I've used both fusion and parallels. Fusion is much better.

You do realize that you will be giving part of the ram & processor to the VM? She doesn't have an MB air does she?

Oh but I do. I love my 13" MBP

Wife needs a new laptop and she has finally agreed to switch over. She is still debating between the Air and new MB. I hope she will let me get her the new MB

She really likes the MAC platform, even though Windows machines put clothes on her back and paid her tuition.

MacBook Air form factor is just too good. Plus I like having Mac side for play and windows side for work

For occasional use, VirtualBox may be good enough, and it's free. When I used a macbook, I used at various times all of Parallels, Fusion, and VBox, and for my use didn't see much difference between them. YMMV, of course, but VirtualBox is pretty good.
