The wife is yelling for a new laptop and basically says its Mac or bust. I do have an ipad and Iphone as does she, i am admittedly dumb when it comes to apple laptops. What is your best "bang for the buck" recommendation on these? Is there a good refurb website that would have good deals? Looking to spend between 600 to 800, something fast and that she can store pictures on mainly.
P.S. I know, they are overpriced, but if i could give this for a Christmas gift and shut her up for a few years about it, its worth it.

The first part is easy, even the cheapest MacBook is fast. Internal Hard drive storage is not cheap, because they’re all SSD and apple charges out the arse for storage.

If she travels extensively I would get the cheapest little MacBook possible and an external 1Tb hard drive (around $100 on Amazon). If not, the cheapest MacBook Pro, along with that hard drive.

Also, interested in this.

My mom just got a macbook air and I played with it a few days so I could give her a crash course. My wife really liked it (iMessage is the best part, why can't apple have a web based imessage?).

Anyways her birthday is coming up and she is dropping hints that she wants a macbook also. I am leaning towards the air or the macbook (not pro). To me, the best features of the air are the quick start up from standby (does macbook offer this also?.).

As I read, seems like Spec wise, the air is a better buy the the macbook, but the macbook has much better display.

Any advice?

Best bang for your buck is probably the 2015 previous generation 13 inch mb pro as a refurb from Apple.

There’s not much difference between the new gen and the old, and there are probably a lot of people that prefer the older gen because of the extra ports.

That's the rub. The Air, for all intents & purposes, is being left in the past by Apple. The design is the same as it has been since 2011, the display barely improved in that time. It does fill a "value" niche for Apple, though, and the specs are good enough for most users.

I have new style MacBook Pro. The one with only USB-C ports. It is annoying to connect an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, Ethernet, etc. I have a dock for all that and it heats up to roughly the temperature of the Sun when it's all going. Beyond that, the new butterfly keyboard - found in the MacBook & Pro - is just awful. The Air is much better for typing. I liked the Air's trackpad better, too.

They all do this.

As far as specs - the MacBook does seem worse than the Air & Pro, but in practice it is plenty fast.

I bought an Air a few years back, but returned it less than a week later. It was a great laptop, but I hated the lackluster display.

mb air feels snappier than my mb pro because its not pushing as many pixels

I was just thinking yesterday how much I love it. Can't stand the squishy keys on my old Macs now. One thing that does drive me crazy is the accidental trackpad hits from my palm now that they increased the size of it even more. Palm rejection is pretty good, but it's not 100%.

What bugs me the most about it is the noise. I feel self conscious using it in a quiet room with other people. I can't imagine using it in a small classroom to type notes or a library. Maybe I just bang the keys harder than others, though.

I’ve used the 12” MacBook and the new MacBook Pro.

I don’t like the butterfly keyboard on the 12”mb, it’s too shallow. The keyboard on the 13” pro is better, and a fair compromise, although if given the opportunity, I’d prefer a traditional feeling keyboard.

I’ve had issues with the larger palm pad as well, but nothing major.

I've had the newer style regular MacBook for about 2.5 years now and its just as fast when I first got it running just about anything I need day to day. Getting into bigger excel files is about the only thing that bogs mine down.

My wife loves her 13" 4 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD MacBook Air. She's used it heavily for four years with no issues.

If I were replacing it today I'd get the 8/256 model. It's $1,200.

2017 Macbook AIR

Does this seem like a pretty solid deal? As referenced above, for my wife - I imagine it will meet all of her needs.

Was looking at the new macbook, LINK, this looks to be a great deal, also.

I imagine the display of the air is good enough for normal use.

Thoughts?

Also, any concerns with buying such an expensive product from a "fulfilled by Amazon" company?

With a 128 GB SSD your wife will have to be very disciplined about file storage. Otherwise, the two in those links look good.

Amazon's return policy has been good for men and others I know.
