I know I had a pre-order thread, well I was able to pick it up today from Best Buy. First off, I switched from Sprint to Verizon and each line received a $200 best buy gift card which was great. So the wifey and I both got a new Edge, Gear VRs, 64gb micro sd cards plus $400 for switching. Crazy awesome (and we'll likely go back and trade in our phones which are an M8 and S5).

Initial impression is that this is probably the most sleek piece of tech I've ever held. Its an incredible package, from the curved screen to the rounded back to the vibrancy of the screen. The bezel to screen ratio is really good (like 76%) and with the curves it makes it look incredible. I could continue to rave but you probably get it; its very impressive.

The software is mixed; Samsung goes to great lengths to include a bunch of features but most of it is useless to me. I tried really hard to go vanilla but I could only last about 6 hours until I put Nova on it. I have an S4 for my work phone and I'll say that TouchWiz is night and day between the two, but I just have certain apps I am partial to. Two newer things I did try: the game launcher is really cool and Samsung Pay is a really good twist on the mobile payment platform.

The hardware is incredible, super smooth. Haven't had issues with RAM management, but maybe my expectations are low because the M8 sucked. I can't comment on battery life, but a lot of people are getting like 6 hours of screen on time which is pretty insane. Tomorrow I'm going to the zoo to put the camera to the test, so can post sample pics tomorrow.

The only disappointment so far is the Always On Display. I don't know what the effect is on battery life, but what I've seen is that it plays a bigger part in drain than Samsung lets on. I could live with it if it showed all notifications but it only shows Samsung App notifications and as I mentioned, I'm partial to other apps in most situations. I don't know if its a Samsung limitation on devs or an individual app limitation. I think as Always-On gets more widespread you'll see these get more common. I'm curios to see how the LG G5 implements it. Anyways, I'll continue on with it to give it a fair eval.

Let me know how things are going in 2 weeks when it starts shutting off for no reason and gets diagnosed with phone aids

I spent the day taking pictures, will get them online tonight and post. The night shooting in auto mode is not great, but I think I made some adjustments in manual mode that will look alright.

Yeah post those shots when you can. Really interested in the S7 sensor . Obviously the biggest advantage over the iPhone are its low light capabilities

These are jpgs straight out of the phone using Auto settings. Two things about the camera I've noticed: since it shoots 4:3, I found a lot of the pics are taken in both landscape and portrait. When you're using the camera, there isn't really a visual cue that oh shite I'm holding this like an idiot like there is with 16:9. Also with the edge its very easy to touch the sides of the screen and the picture wont take. Also you cant really rest it directly on things because the screen can think its something touching it.

(If you care to see full-size you can right click and open in a new tab)

I went to the zoo and the only thing I really photographed was the entrance sign Camera doesn't really have the reach to get the animals and since its the end of winter no flowers were out. I took multiple pics of the sign, the others were all way too black. The HDR is set to "auto" usually, but on this I turned it on. I've read that setting it to On produces a different pic than letting the camera decide to use it. Sort of looks like it on this, but could have just been due to the manual focus and the metering.

This little guy has come up in my flower bed. Its super easy to create depth of field with the camera. Pretty good detail with no real effort; in manual mode it would be a lot easier to fine tune the focus.

Here's a shot looking downtown at sunset. There's also a deer statue in the middle of the bridge looking on as well. Don't know the story behind it but its interesting

Here's a medium-light picture after the sun set. In auto mode its a struggle to get a good pic honestly. I had much better results shooting in manual mode. The camera really tries to overexpose the images. When viewed on here they may look alright but at 100% zoom its rough. You can really notice the noise in the sky. With some basic cropping though it would look a lot better.

Here's a pic from OSU. It really looks like the flash was on but there was just a nearby street light. Pretty good detail on this, nothing crazy.

Also I tested out the panorama and hyperlapse functions; both were good and easy to use. Nothing crazy or unexpected.

My next post will show photos I took in manual mode and did post-processing on with Lightroom. In terms of the low-light pictures I got a lot better results.

These are all RAW images touched in Lightroom (on my PC, havent used the app yet).

This is similar to the image above except the darks are much more visible. I had to go in and bring the red, blue and green saturation up a lot.

Nothing too crazy with this one, I think it was mostly auto settings. The only way to save the raw image is to shoot it in manual mode, otherwise it could have just been in Auto mode with some post processing. I probably went overboard with blue saturation but it looked flat without it.

Here's where the fun starts. I underexposed the image (from 0.0 to -0.6 I think) and upped the ISO from the auto value of 200 to around 400. I really like the way everything looks except the sky. On this and the next pic the sky looks really bad.

Use the same settings more or less on the pic above, you can still see the same issue with the sky.

The bridge I took these from had these blue lights all over. The auto mode still wanted to oversaturate things, so similar to the other night pics I lowered the exposure and upped the ISO. I liked this because it was a good example of some low light bokeh.

Overall I think the results are kind of mixed. I think its a hell of a cell phone camera that is going to be able to handle 95% of what gets thrown at it. The issues that plague it (limited reach, noise in low-light) still plague every other cell phone camera out there. I will say that at low-light manual mode was the way to go. Some of the reviews say the default software is too aggressive to correct exposure and does too much smoothing. With more time I'm sure I could get better pictures out of it, but at the end of the day its a cell phone camera and most of the time as long as its not awful I'm ok with it. I don't think its the best camera out there (the Note 5 seems better) but its definitely upper echelon.

I struggle with what the expectations are for a cell phone camera. I am very happy with the results, especially based on what I'm coming from, but at full size its easy to start tearing things apart. But I suppose its like that for all cell phone cameras.

Absolutely stunning

Only issue i see is a bit of pixellation with the night sky but that is still much better than most smartphones out today

That's awesome. Damn nice pictures...slight hijack, but does anyone know when the new Note is coming out? I'm holding off getting a new phone until then. The S7 seems nice, but I really like my Note 4 and want the 6.

It seems like the Notes have been fall releases and the galaxies have been march releases - I anticipate it staying the same.

Man, this is like the story of my phone life. I have a note 4. It's about a year and a half old, the camera has some serious sensor problems that are apparently irreparable. But I love this phone.

I'm waiting for the debate this fall between IPhone 7 and Note 6. Texting on this note 4 has been the shittiest thing about it other than the camera crapping out most of the time. But the removable battery and external storage mostly make up for it.

Should be a good battle this September.

I'll probably be getting the S7 edge in a month for work. Reviews like this have me pretty sure I'm leaving iOS and returning to android. Through work my choices are only an iPhone 6s/Plus and a Galaxy S7/Edge

I have a S4 for work running complete stock and it's been going good for 2.5 years.

I have a Galaxy Tab 10.5 which is almost 2 years old, still going great.

My wife did not have such luck with her S5. I am a big fan of custom ROMs, so I don't anticipate a problem (if/when they figure out root)

How can you go to the zoo and only get the entrance sign?

I've seen that deer in a few photos though and was wondering his origins.
