I'm about to have a nervous breakdown. This apparently results from a GPU failure. I get to the login screen, type my password, it starts to load the bar, then freezes on a gray screen. There's a repair service for free (because of a class action lawsuit I presume), but I'm nervous about my Hard Drive. Is there anyway to back it up in its current state? I'd kill everyone at the Apple Store if I got it back and everything was gone. If I can back it up, please walk me through it as if I have Downs

Getting another comp regardless. frick this shite happening again

First, get a SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable then pull your hard drive and make a copy of the drive to a working one.

Nortech

They can help keep you from losing your data, and perform your repair under warranty.

Mine did the same thing and the people who repaired it said the hard drive disconnected from the "prongs" it was sitting on or some shite like that. Lost everything :/

They probably just kept the hard drive though because of the 500 gigs of movies on there

Remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer and copy at will.

Genius should be able to transfer data to new Mac for you. But you should have back ups.

I know. Kept putting it off.

Ordered a 2.5GHz 512GB MBP with 15" this morning. I think, worst case, I can hook up old hard drive to my new computer, back everything up to external hard drive, then send old computer off for free repair.

Even if i sent my laptop with HD in it, a GPU repair shouldn't affect the HD, correct?

You should never do that. Always pull the HD out unless the HD is bad.

Spooky, what would you guys charge for this fix? Is it something you guys have experience with from the past? Apple is free, which is so tempting, but I really try to give local businesses the money. What kind of turnaround is expected? Could you guys help me with a backup prior to repair?

i've had dozens of PCs and Macs, and my Macs absolutely "just work," compared to the PCs.

I just upgraded my 7+ year old MBP that I've beaten the hell out of, for about $300 (SSD, battery, 8gig). It now works WAY better/faster than anything you could buy new for 2X that and has a 17" screen.

Had this problem about 5 months ago with mine. Brought it to the Apple Store and they repaired it for free in less than a week. No problems with data loss from the harddrive.

During the repair process, they also replaced a bunch of stuff for free.

See this post from September:

Also, you can use your computer in the meantime, there's a work around. But it doesn't work as well.

Computer is still working good as ever.

With Time Machine, there is no excuse to put off backups. Simply configure it and make sure that you plug in a USB drive, its not that hard.

Open the broken mac and extract the hard drive. Put it into an external USB case and plug it into the new machine. Once you have that done, should just be a matter of plugging in the drive and copying files over.

In the future, if you keep your TM backups current, you would literally only have to pull the drive in the same manner and tell TM to restore your system to the new machine. I have done that three or four times without any problems. Works great.

Why don't you have a time capsule? Not only it is a great router but it wirelessly backs up your computer whenever you connect to it.

I hope you get your stuff back but after you do you really need to buy one. Here is one from apple.com that will back up 2tb and is only $179. LINK

Good move. Last Apple I will ever get. I gave them a chance, and its been pure hell since barely over a year of owning it.

You guys are the shite. I will probably start a thread asking for step by step, Down syndrome level explanation of how to use time machine. What drive should I get?
