Looking to buy a new 50-55" tv

To surprise my husband. Which one do I buy?
We currently have a Vizio and I've been pleased with it, but I don't know anything about TVs
Any help is appreciated.

Get 55" or bigger. Size does matter and the most common regret of TV purchasers is that they didn't get a bigger screen.
Also, where is the TV going: dark room or bright, well-lighted room?

Size of room matters too.
I have a 42 in my apartment which is perfectly fine (of course 60 is better but also at a major price difference).
I have no desire to drop $1k on a TV so I stay in the 42-46 range for $400.

Can easily get to 55 at 600 or less these days.
Depends on the space. In a big living room/big wall, 42 inch is just pretty small. Not trying to be douchey about it, but its just become so common to see large tvs that 42inch isn't necessarily the standard it once was, IMO.

Sure, you can get a lower end 55 for 600 but it won't be a smart tv and it may not be at least 120 hertz.

My roommate and I had a discussion about this just yesterday. I live in a small apartment too. I sit maybe 5 feet away from the TV. I have a 42" tv.. he wants to go buy a 60". I told him he's retarded, that's too big for our small arse living room and way too expensive to be worth it. If you are too close to a huge TV, the picture doesn't look very good. 50" would be the biggest I'd go in my small room.

If you look around you can easily find that.

Do this:
Go to Walmart and stand away from the TVs at your usual viewing distance. (Usually its about 6')
One of them will feel 'right.' Buy the next size up..
As for brands:
--Sonys (great but overpriced. I always found they attracted lightning strikes.)
--LG (probably pound for pound the best brand going.)
--Samsung (one step behind LG)
--Vizio (look great in the stores, but their power supplies always seem to go out after a time.)
GET A SMART TV!! Not just a smart hub. Smart TVs can tie into your internet service - usually via your wireless network. Even if you can't think of a reason to use that, you will find something within a year or so. (I use it for newsfeeds, weather feeds off of Twitter. Pretty cool to have that info rolling through in real time.) Some people stream movies this way.
Stay away from the 4K for the moment. There is no 4K content out there to be had. The only good use for a 4K set is playing BlueRay discs, and driving down the costs of the non-4K sets..
If the price seems high, you will probably keep this set 5 years. Break it down that way. Its a good investment.

LG before Samsung... Are you crazy?

Getting a Smart TV is a waste of money IMO. For $150 average price differential, the platforms that most of the tv's run are slow and not very user friendly or customizable. You will be much happier adding a Roku ($85) or Fire TV ($99) box if you desire streaming.

I haven't seen this difference just due to "smart TV" in years... Right when they came out that was certainly the case, but now I don't see a significant difference. Most TV's with better specs are Smart though...

My Samsung smart tv 55" has done me right. That's my suggestion. I've owned Sony, toshiba, and Samsung. Samsung is the best.

Agreed...I wouldn't make that a primary focus of my search though

Yeah, the LGs just seem to hold up. I travel a LOT, and I keep seeing LG sets in hotel rooms. They can take it. They judge edge the Samsungs by a nose, but they're my go-to box when buying.

What setting did you use? I've has that vizio 6 months and hate it.
