Anyone know what can be done? I know Netflix compresses their audio, but some things just sound terrible. My LG Surround Sound is sweet when playing regular tv or DVDs, but cannot handle certain shows/movies...options? I have read through a lot of online material but see limited options.

You're going to have to give us a little more detail.

LG Smart 3D Blu-ray Home Theatre System. I have an LG Smart TV so it is 100% compatible with each other. Sounds incredible, but it's just Netflix that it cannot handle.

You tried changing what mode it's on?

Always used the optical setting which is the one that is suggested. Played around with it a little, but they all are so static-filled it makes watching miserable.

So you're having static? Have you tried switching cables? What about HDMI instead of optical? Have you tried watching Netflix from another source?

Still need more info. What are you using as your Netflix source? The TV, or does the home theater system have a built-in Netflix app?

Yes, the LG system has a built in app.

Is the app built in to the TV or into the actual surround system?

I don't really understand what you're asking here...the LG system has a "Home" option in which I can choose and in that sectiin it has option like Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Are you accessing Netflix by hitting the Netflix button on your TV remote? Yes or no

No. For me to access, I have to change the TV seeing from HDMI 1 to 2, I click the Home button on the LG remote, scroll to the Premium choice and then hit Netflix.

My LG mini system doesn't stream anything any longer. I used to use it for Netflix and Pandora. Just use a fire stick now and I'm happy again.

When you're accessing Netflix through the home theater system, does it display the surround sound format? For Netflix content with multichannel audio, the audio stream should be encoded as Dolby Digital Plus format, and your receiver should display the format of the audio stream being played back.

There's also the caveat that not all Netflix content is available with multichannel audio. I find many older shows/movies are only available with 2-channel audio, in which case simulated surround sound like Dolby Pro-Logic II is the best you'll get.

Bitstream would let the sound bar do the decoding, that may work better.

What's the difference between all these settings?

Bit streaming means outputting the original digital audio stream unaltered, bit for bit, regardless of original format (Dolby Digital, DTS, ETC). Many TVs and soundbars can't decode some surround formats like DTS, so you have the option of outputting a down mixed generic digital audio signal (PCM) so you have basic 2 channel sound on these devices.

The wrinkle in your case is that if the Netflix app is truly native to the surround system, there's no reason it would need to send an audio signal to your TV at all; audio should be handled entirely by the surround system. If the Netflix app is actually running on the TV, that would explain the issues you're having as many TVs can't output a multichannel audio signal.

Also, you mentioned optical cables earlier in the thread...optical digital cables can't handle the newer surround formats like Dolby Digital Plus used by Netflix and the Dolby/DTS HD formats used on Blu Ray discs. Should be using HDMI cables between components; a single HDMI cable will handle both audio and video.

HDMI 1 connects the TV to the Dish hopper while HDMI 2 connects the LG system to the tv. HDMI 3 connects the PS4 to the tv.

Usually with a system like that all inputs go to the theater system and a single output goes from the theater system to the TV.
