I'm helping a friend look for a laptop to use AutoCad on. His budget is $1,000-$1,500. If going in the high range would give him a significant boost he's willing to spend the money. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Lenovo Y50, $1119.99
LINK
Core i7-4720HQ
16GB RAM
15.6in IPS 1080P screen
NVidia GeForce 860M with 4GB vram
1TB+8GB SSHD (hybrid)
802.11AC

Remove that SSHD and replace with a $200 500GB real SSD, and it's pretty much an all-around perfect Autocad laptop.

I have a travel laptop I run autocad on. Its an i5 core 14 inch screen w/ 4 Gigs of ram and a 120 mg solid state drive. It handles Acad13 easily. But running autocad on a small screen is an arse whipping.....even a 17" laptop is too small. I hope he has a big monitor to connect it to.

If a 17" screen would be more ideal than 15", here's an alternative Acer Aspire v17 for $1249:LINK
i7 4710HQ
16 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
256GB SSD
1TB HDD
17.3" 1080p IPS display

Thanks. Yea he has a monitor he will hook it up to I think. He just needs it to also be portable. This should be perfect for him. Thanks again.

I also would like to know, just for shits and giggles, why he isn't using one from his office..

We've canned a few guys recently for (1) using our CAD outside of work (2) taking files home to work on

Uhhh. people do work for themselves sometimes.

Unless you're doing some heavy 3d work, it doesn't take much horsepower to run Autocad.

Using company equipment, including software, is a good way to get yourself fired..

Well in this case it's obviously not company equipment.

I don't ask questions. I will say that he is probably the most trustworthy person I know so I would have to assume he is planning to start his own small business.

I work for myself and have to buy my own equipment. I don't live on the corporate teet.

Autodesk has what they call "Home Use" licenses for several products (I think this includes AutoCad) that is essentially an extra license for the single license purchased (soon to be only available on subscription).

Not getting permission is obviously wrong.

Also, when I had issues with licensing for Revit a few years ago the tech from Autodesk advised me to just go ahead and use one of the home use licenses on one of our workstations. Clearly the guy was just lazy and trying to find a quick fix but I was completely surprised.

The amount of ram he needs will be dictated by the complexity (large number of objects or AEC/3D objects) of drawings and amount (and complexity) of attached xrefs.
