Laptop/desktop for 11 year old

Thinking of getting my son a new computer for his 11th BD. He is a pretty naive kid and want to protect him online and all that jazz but he is interested in computers and wants to play minecraft/roblox etc on his own machine instead of sharing a pc with parents. Any advice on something that isnt too outrageous ($300 or so) but will be reliable machine for 3-4 years until high school? I would prefer the desktop route as the computer will be stationary in our office and not going to his room or anything. Thanks in advance!

He some kind of genius?
Subscribe to NetNanny or something similar.
Get a good Anti-Virus program. I like ESET
Don't freak if he google stuff like tits, arse, boobies, etc...
Do freak if he googles stuff like meatspin.

Cad I thought about that but will he be able to minecraft and everything? I thought you had to download the software for minecraft and wasn't sure the Chromebooks could do that or not (never messed with one)

not easily. the only way he's going to get that is by either hacking linux onto the laptop or remote desktop-ing into another PC somewhere that can run it.
then again, you're much less likely to have to deal with the fallout of viruses & ransomware with a chromebook (because it doesn't run java) so you have to think what is most important to you with getting them this laptop.

Do you have a monitor? Most big box store desktop towers start in the $300-400 range but don't come with a monitor. However, you can get a decent monitor for less than $100.

If you want the computer to last for 3-4 years, I would make sure it has at least 8 GB of RAM. A Pentium i5 processor would be nice, but AMD has nice stuff too. Hard drive size isn't that important, as it's cheap and easy to add more later. A SSD would run faster but probably isn't necessary for anything your son will be doing.
