Get a SSD of for your boot drive. Does the motherboard have a M.2 slot?
Posted on 1/13/16 at 10:27 pm to hawgndodge
Well you didn't really include the main components there.
CPU?
Mobo?
WHAT RAM did it include?
980ti is a great card but which one? You can have the greatest GPU of all time but the build can be shite unless you have the CPU for it.
AND ULTIMATELY, what did you pay?

Seems like a nice set of hardware although I'm not sure what goals you're trying to meet.

For our church. Running video for the service and producing dvds. Some moderate editing.
$1800

Memory slots
4 DIMM
Expansion slots
1 mini PCIe x1; 2 PCIe x16
600 W AC power adapter
That mean anything?

What you gonna do with 32 GB of RAM?
Lack of SSD is a total fail. It's the single biggest upgrade you'll likely ever make.

well that GPU is gonna be idle as frick.
But yeah, you overbought and overpaid, a lot. Such is life. But jeez. I mean, you spent about $400-500 too much on the GPU, even for a pro setup.
Dare I ask what program you're using to edit?

And that's why I ask what program he's using. Everyone says MORE RAM when it comes to video editing, but there are actually only a handful of programs that will actually cache all of your project files in RAM. Most of the "home user" programs only use RAM for native effects/transitions.
EDIT: WHAT THE frick? I'm so drinking right now that I overlooked the no SSD. Satan is surely happy with your purchase.

No SSD on this rig is like having 45 dollar tires on a Ferrari.

That's a shitload of RAM (not always a bad thing, but still kind of ridiculous) and from what you're saying about usage, that video card was waaaay over what you needed. If you're running video/sound out of the pc for the service, I would have spent that extra money on a good sound card and 100% what the other guys are saying... SSD all day, every day. I'm not sure why people don't understand that it is literally the biggest thing to happen to PC's in a long time. If you have a spare 150 bucks or so, definitely throw one into it with a fresh install of Windows 10. With just that one upgrade, you'd have a pretty sweet machine that will last a number of years. Only other thing I noticed was your power supply is adequate, but I like to have some room to wiggle there.

We're running 3 70" monitors that's why I went with that card. As far as the ssd I'll definitely look at doing that. The audio is running through a presonus 32 channel digital mixing board.

Size has nothing to do with it, and quantity has little to do with it. Hell, I hope you aren't counting on using all three with HDMI. And if they're only outputting video, you went $500 too much on the graphics card. If you cancel your order and tell me in detail what you're intending to use the PC for, I can find you a much cheaper solution. I imagine the congregation would appreciate the cost savings if you used church money.
What video editing program are you using?

Over built and over spent. I hope you didn't use church money for that.

Nope. I'm donating it.
Then you're fine. Install an SSD and a sound card, and it'll be there for anything it's ever needed for. An organization's needs change, and if you have no problem with the extra money you spent, having way more than you need right now isn't a bad thing.
