I'm moving houses in a few weeks and I'm going to use this time to minimize the kids TV's (one in their living room, maybe a bedroom or two)

I am aware of the Fire Stick and what it used to be able to do with Kodi, etc.

If I just need a minimal footprint device that can be worked to watch youtube, netflix, etc easily from kids about to be teenagers, is the Fire Stick still viable?

If not what's the go to device for a minimal footprint that has the best features? Roku?
Thanks

Roku is the easiest set up to use.

I prefer the new chromecast but the layout is a little more complicated.

On the low end they're all pretty much the same. Any current kid will have no problem figuring them out since their interfaces are intuitive if you grew up using electronic devices. Anyone who thinks one is more complicated than the other is probably old and curmudgeony . I would probably lean firestick since this is the time of year you can get them cheap as frick and it's not a closed system if you at some point decide you want an app not available in the app store like YouTube TV on Roku if that war is still going on or if you want to go down the Kodi road. All that said cheap streaming device is cheap streaming device so place expectations accordingly.

I would avoid Roku if you ever plan on using YoutubeTV or YouTube.

YouTubeTV app has been pulled from Roku and it would not surprise me if the YouTube app is the next to go.

I’ve tried them all — Roku, Firestick, etc and keep coming back to the Apple 4K TV box. Simply the best all around. Pay once ($189), cry once, unless you’re like me and have bought three of them.

Look into the NVIDIA Shield unit. Heard great things.

Treat the kids to good stuff and they’ll appreciate it more than you.

I've tried them all but I'm currently liking the Chromecast with Google TV. It's smooth, easy to navigate, and hasn't given me any issues so far. On sale at the Google store for $40 on Black Friday. Maybe sooner.

4k firesticks for $25 is tough to beat. They work well with plex also. I will plan on getting a few shields soon after moving.

Yep, just bought a new one to replace one that I think is over 3 years old. I usually order one every few years when they mark them half off. One of the old ones is still running my TV out on the deck, but the one in the bedroom was acting up lately so I got the new 4k one for $25.

Just saw the new fire stick 4K max models Black Friday for only $35…those are 40% faster than the 4K models…may buy one to try it. Additional buttons on the remote as well.

I have 3 and they work fine. I use YouTube TV instead of cable and Firestick works well with that app. It helps if you clean the cache's of your app's occasionally (unfortunately you have to clean them individually) and to manually check for updates and to do a periodic restart also.

That was another reason I grabbed it. This is the version I got:
LINK

It has the Netflix, Prime, Disney+, and Hulu buttons at the bottom. It is in our bedroom TV where our 3 year old usually watches, and going straight to Netflix or Disney+ is great. Remote seems to be great, and the stick is much faster getting to content than our previous version.

I didn't find the Google TV with chrome cast hardly any better than the firestick and i couldn't connect to my Amazon basics soundbar so I put it on another TV. The menu is probably a little better with the shows you've been watching or whatever but it still takes a second for the YouTube TV app etc to open up to get to that show.
