I currently have an iPad Air 2 and I'm thinking about upgrading to an iPad Pro 9.7. I was wanting to know if it's worth the upgrade and is it considerably faster than the air 2. I'm essentially looking for a laptop replacement and everything I've heard is that the Pro is as good as you'll find in the apple lineup in terms of what I'm looking for. I mostly just browse the internet, iTunes, stream movies, light gaming. No photo editing or anything like that. What say you?

I have the 12in pro and I love it. I use it for similar purposes as you as well for some word editing and excel.

It has exceeded my expectations.

I would recommend the apple keyboard as well. The pencil is useful if you draw/sketch or take notes

It'll probably be 7-8 months before the iPad gets updated again. Probably issn't worth the upgrade though. I mean, iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro are only a generation apart.

The Air 2 is more than enough for what you want to do. I have a 12.9" Pro and I don't notice much of a difference between that and my son's Air 2 in terms of speed. I upgraded because I wanted a bigger screen.

That's what I was afraid of....I don't want to upgrade for minimal difference in speed although the keyboard does look useful I can always buy a 3rd party keyboard with just as much functionality as apple's Smart Keyboard.

The Pro's will likely benchmark a good bit better than the Air 2 but in real world use I don't see much of a difference. There's also the Apple Pencil. If you're a creative artist type then it might be worth it to upgrade. Also if you want 256GB of storage then you may view the upgrade as worth it. For just a pure speed increase I don't think an upgrade is really worth it. I don't use the keyboard so I can't comment on that.
