Um yes. Most SSDs come with some kind of migration disk to do exactly that...

You can do a disk image to the SSD provided that it's large enough. Most HDDs have two or three times the capacity of the largest SSDs.

ya, it's a new machine, with the hdd. and nothing on it

haven't looked at the migration software yet...maybe not for a few days, got lots of chores to do til then.

size won't be an issue, but thanks just the same.

Here are instructions from iLikeLSUtoo to do what you're describing. [link=(www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/display.aspx?sp=51748730&s=2&p=51556892#51748730)]LINK[/link]

Mostly correct, you would need to do a clone and not an image.

ok, clone, not an image

still need to verify per migrating software...

Don't use that link. The images don't show up anymore because for some reason hotlinks expire on this forum (seriously, how ridiculous is that?)

A while back I put the whole thing in a PDF with much better formatting and shared it on Google drive: LINK

It's slightly out of date, but should still work the same. However, recently Minitool partition wizard added a cloning feature, so Macrium Reflect isn't even needed anymore. I only recommend using Minitool because of the issue with partitions on some PCs (see the instruction guide for details).

for those also interested in the minitool;

LINK manager.html

there still may be update info on the samsung ssd, will need to check and compare to instructions.

already had trouble/crashing with crucial ssd which needed updates prior to cloning

When are the advantages of an SSD most apparent? I've got a new laptop with a traditional hard drive, and this thing seems really fast to me. Disk access times don't seem to be a major hindrance to anything.

OS boot times and any read/write from the data drive. Once the program is loaded into RAM, you wont see much of an improvement until new data is accessed. For an example, a gamer will see a decrease in launch times and loading screens in game, but will not see performance enhancements past that.

The bottleneck is the SATA 3 port though, which basically caps out in real world applications at about 550 MB/s. The new M.2 interface that is becoming more popular on higher end boards caps out at a transfer rate a closer to 4 GB/s. Load an OS on one of those and the computer will boot before you finish pushing the damn power button.

I imagine that in the highly visual 3d world to come that we will all need faster disk access. I just don't see a need for any sort of change right now. The higher prices don't seem worth it.

You are in the extreme minority even today.

Have you ever used a computer with an SSD? The difference is night and day. Programs pop open almost instantly. The computer boots in about 1/4th the time. The hard drive is almost always the bottleneck in everyday use.

Can't say that I have, but I seriously doubt I'm in an extreme minority... or even in a minority, for that matter.

Absolute nonsense.
A perfectly good ~250GB SSD can be had on sale at anytime for under $90. Thats plenty of storage for an OS drive and the increased performance is well worth it.
The difference between my SSD OS drive and my WD Black storage drive is akin to Fiber vs Dial up. We are talking 500 MB/s vs 50 MB/s read/write speeds.
