If the drive is truly dead, be prepared to spend a lot of money. You can send it off for a data recovery, but this often can cost in excess of $1,000.

Contact a company like Kroll Ontrack

Like, Windows repair mode? If so, the drive ain't dead.

Where did you take the drive?

You could try mounting the drive yourself and see if you can get the data. If the drive is truly dead - you'll only be out $30

Hard Drive Dock

Otherwise DriveSavers but like another said - probably in excess of $1000 - but if you have to have it, they do good work.

I may have a coupon for them somewhere around the house that will save you $200.

Yes I have most of the info backed up on a external hard drive but not everything.

A friend of mine has it in a hard drive dock right now. He's saying its spinning and the drives show up so he's not giving up yet.

The first place that told me it was dead also said it wasn't spinning.

If the drive mounts, it's definitely not dead.

I'd suggest not going back to the first guy you went to.

Yeah I'm not. I just think he's lazy and he got to sell me a new hard drive. Which was all he was worried about.

If you can see it - you can recover it 99% of the time.

If he's got it mounted - run checkdisk or a disk repair tool.

In windows open a command prompt,
type "chkdsk :DRIVE /r" - everything inside the quotes - but change DRIVE to whatever drive letter your disk is...It may take an hour or more, but it will attempt to repair the disk and move data off of any bad sectors.

If the drive is dying, running checkdisk is a bad idea.

The moment you get a drive that might be dying running, you image the drive.

this is the correct answer.
data recovery 101 - image the dying drive ASAP. any other unnecessary read/writes jeopardize your chances of recovering data without paying out the wazoo.
