I pay for 80 Mbps internet service and get about 95 when running a speed test while hooked up with a wire. On wireless the best I can get is about 25. I assume it's my router so which one do I need to buy? I have an old cheap Netgear.

Everything is connected through wireless so if I can't fix issue there's no reason to pay for 80 Mbps.

ASUS N66 is my go-to right now. It has great range and a ton of features.

Bought one of these last year. I have failed to utilize any of the features other than having a 1TB HD hooked to it, because I got a free one with the purchase of the Router

Seawolf, what kind of features are you using? I'm not great with routers I'll admit.

After doing a ton of research, I just ordered the Asus ac68, which is the step up to the n66. I have a few AC enabled products so I figured I might as well get the 68, along with the idea of future proofing. I have 3 roku's throughout my home, so I figured the improved hardware of the 68 was worth the extra coin. If you aren't gonna be steaming a bunch of video, the n66 is probably your best bet.

I admit that I don't use many of them either. (port forwarding, DNS, etc.) I like having the dual band and multiple networks. I have two guest networks for visitors and keep all of my automation devices on a separate network entirely.

any way to boost my wifi speed? I realize I'm never going to have 300 Mbps through wifi, but I'd kinda like to have more than 48. are the ACs topped out at 54?

What are you testing on? What is the wireless capability of that device?

802.11g will get you UP TO 54mbps
802.11n will get you UP TO 600mbps
802.11ac will get you UP TO 1.3gbps+

Those are theoretical speeds. Without more info, expect 20-30 on G, 75-300 on N and 500+ on AC.

I've got to figure out how to do this. In the process of buying a new home and I'm going to add a few automation devices. Hopefully the router comes in handy a little more in the new place.

The modifiable QoS is a nice feature that I use, along with multiple networks, guest networks and attached storage.

Looks like that may be your problem. First quote is from AR9485 tech sheet. Second quote is just a quick grab to summarize 1x1 stream device issues.

that's what I figured. I've got it and the xbone hardwired and get 320 Mbps, so it's not really an issue there. I'll check to see what my gf's laptop has.

also the iPad gets 30-40, and I assume there's nothing I can do there.

That's 2 channels for 2.4 Ghz - b/g/n devices. 3 channels for 5 Ghz - ac.

Basically your laptop card is capable of communicating on only one stream while your combo device can support 2 streams. If your other laptop has 2 streams, you will see a double up in speed, plus a little more probably.

just did one on her macbook pro. started out at 80 Mbps, then tapered down to 58. ran it again and now it's topped out at 16, but hovering around 8 Mbps. wtf

3rd and 4th times came in at a staggering 1.5 Mbps

You're using speedtest.net for your tests? I would try again later. What card is in the Macbook pro?

yes.

specs just say 802.11n wifi wireless networking; IEEE 802.11a/b/g compatible.

trying to find out the exact card

AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0xF5)

PHY mode 802.11n

firmware Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (7.15.159.13.12)

just tested again and it's 1.9 Mbps
