I have:

2 Bulbs in Pendant lighting above my kitchen island
7 Recessed in Kitchen/LR (Open Space)
2 Lamp Light Bulbs in LR
2 Hallway Sconce Bulbs
12 Fan Bulbs (4 Fans, 3 in BR+1 in LR)
2 Laundry Room Sconce Bulbs
5 Dining Room Sconce/Chandelier Bulbs
2 Lamp Light Bulbs in MBR
1 Waterproof Recessed above shower in MBA
1 Recessed above Tub in MBA
6 Bulbs in 2 Sconces above vanity in MBA
1 Bulb in Sconce in Water Closet
2 Bulbs in Sconce in MBR Closet
1 Outdoor Bulb in hanging Sconce above Front Door
3 Bulbs in Sconce above vanity in Hall BA
2 Bulbs in Sconce on patio in backyard

I'd like to figure out if I'd save more by going all in all at once, or whether I should just focus on a room at a time. If we went with the latter, my focus would be on the Living Room/Dining/Kitchen as it's one big open area.

If I can swing two areas, I'd want to try to do Kitchen/Living+Master BR/Master BA.

I want all Alexa enabled. I'm also curious as to whether it would be a better idea to buy smart plugs controlled by Alexa for the four lamps in LR/MBR.

Help me price this all out, Tech Board!!!!

ETA: I'm also open to the idea of a Hub that could control all of this that ties into Alexa if it cuts the cost. The main goal is to leverage Alexa.

You may also want to consider wifi switches and get normal led bulbs. Price out both. I have and like hue bulbs, but they are pricey for every bulb replacement.

Can Alexa really handle controlling all those lights through your home ? Or does she need a control system to trigger ?

It depends on the system, for hue you name everything in the hue app and it gets all its info from the hue hub about what each room and light is named.

That's why I mentioned hubs and smart plugs. I feel like I can leverage the lamps and perhaps just use some simple dimmable LED's there. Elsewhere a Hub could potentially be used for the leverage I need for the use case I'm talking about.

But I simply haven't really scratched the surface of the smart home/LED combo to know enough to be able to implement my idea here with confidence that I'm doing it correctly and for a price that allows for future flexibility and not breaking the bank.

I would think for that many lights Lutron radio RA2 should be better than doing smart bulbs everywhere.

You are going to need some kind of hub that connects to Alexa. There are no lights that connect directly.

Looks like he is trying to make you go broke. Those seem quite pricey.

Eta: if using switches, you need to check if you have neutrals currently. Having no neutral at the switch limits your brand choices.

Ok, yeah. Wasn't thinking about wifi bulbs. Using a hub would be a lot cheaper though then buying all wifi bulbs.

Yes it might be pricy but the switch/dimmers don't need to be replaced and will work with just about anything when paired with a smart bridge pro. They have parts for homes with and without neutral wires.

Basically the Lutron would just be a whole home lighting control system that you can trigger with Alexa. Lots of good info on their website. You won't find a better product for lighting.

The Feit's are a good option for recessed fixtures. They are dimmable and available in different sizes and wattage equivalents. They're advertised as lasting 45 years.

What do you mean by this? What doesn't need to be replaced?

Meaning the bulb doesn't talk back to the control instead the switch does the communication. Bulbs need to replaced where switches, most of the time, do not. I think that would have to be figured into the cost.

I got an echo for Christmas and just decided to get GE rocker switches/dimmers (Z Wave) and a Wink Hub 2. Seems to be the simplest way to go about it. Slowly accumulating the switches because they're $30+ a pop. The thing I didn't like about bulbs, other than the expense of buying individual smart bulbs, is that you kind of have to commit to using the smart function rather than wall switches. If you turn off the smart bulbs at the switch, they lose power and can no longer be controlled.

Shame you didn't get in on the hue Gen 3 bulbs for $15 from BBB when they had them.

I prefer the hub bulbs because they work with Alexa and are homekit compatible. You can catch pricing mistakes and sales a few times a year on the bulbs so join the hue reddit and check sites like slickdeals often and you can get them cheap

Same here. For multiple bulbs, just seems a smart switch makes more sense.

In general, I tend to prefer switches over bulbs. The idea is to control the power going to the bulb. A switch does this, and will function as a standard mechanical switch when pressed on the wall.

The only time it seems where bulbs make more sense would be where you want color temp control.
