I was looking at replacing my Samsung GS4 with the upcoming LG G4 mainly because it's been 2 years. It had also started getting sluggish, and the battery life had gotten pretty bad.

But when I weighed the fact that I'm not in love with the G4, and the ROM development on it is going to take a few months I decided to wait.

So I backed up my S4, reflashed my ROM, and bought 2 new batteries for $20. Now, it's running better than ever, and I'm wondering why was I thinking about upgrading at all.

I think it's going to be years before this phone is obsolete. I'm already running 4.4.2. How long before 64bit, and 8 cores are actually going to be needed?

When the prevalent technologies that are used symbiotically with it are no longer compatible...so a long fricking time.

I have had a Lumia 920 since November 2012 and it runs as good as day 1.

I do plan to upgrade to a larger screen when the Windows 10 phones hit, but after that, it will take a major new innovation or disaster to get me to upgrade again.

I had the S4 and it isn't a bad phone at all besides battery life which you could fix with buying yourself a cheap one off amazon

I may try to do it myself, but the difficulty rating on ifxit was "difficult." The repair shops want $160-175. They say it's too hard to just replace the glass, they have to replace the digitizer too.

At this point you could buy a new phone every year and notice a big performance difference. I wouldn't wait longer than 2, but to me three is the absolute limit with that last year being way behind.

Wow, that's crazy.

To your OP, depends on the the phone I would say. I bought my wife and I each a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 back in 2012. Work fine to this day - I'm sure one will break now, lol. But really, I'll replace when I think it makes sense - outdated or not working properly.
