Have the i7 256gb model and love it. Best piece of technology that I own. Works awesome as a tablet or a laptop replacement.

Damn, what do you use that for?

Nothing too intensive at the moment, but it handles everything I've thrown at it so far. Long story short... my original Surface Pro got stolen, insurance covers replacement cost if I spend at least the amount I paid for the original, new roommate works for Microsoft so I got a discount, so the i7 256gb model cost me like $150.

I would urge you to buy a Yoga 2 or Yoga 3 instead of a surface if you're looking to use it as a laptop. I returned my surface because it couldn't hold up as a legitimate laptop in my work and school environment

Wut?
The surface is better built than most laptops, with just as much horsepower

You must not have had the Surface 3 Pro. The other hardware sold under the "Surface" brand, especially those running on RT, are another matter. But Surface 3 Pro specifically is the best thing going right now.

$150? That's either a typo, or hook a brother up.

No, he's saying after the insurance reimbursement for his original Surface Pro that was stolen, and after his friend's employee discount, he was only $150 additional out of pocket for the SP3. I had to read it a second time as well. I was thinking, let's be friends.

Ah, got it. That tells me he was vastly overinsured and was pretty fortunate the original was stolen.

My apartment got broken into and that was one of the things that was taken. So I was fortunate from the viewpoint of getting to upgrade for cheap
But yes, that was poorly worded. Basically insurance would have given me like $600 or something if I didn't replace it, but would give me almost $1500 if I did replace it. I chose to replace it, so they gave me the $1500 and I just paid the $150ish difference to upgrade to the 256gb i7 model.

About which part? I hear nothing but good things about the surface pro's build quality, and the specs speak for themselves.

Lots of people hate anything about MSFT just for the sake of hating them.
There aren't too many devices out there with customer satisfaction as high as the surface pro. Now the RT version is garbage but I've only seen a few negative reviews of the Pro and they were clearly Apple people wanting an Apple product.

I feel like I'd have to drop my SP1 off a 2 story building to do any major damage to it.

I've got a SP3 (i7/8GB/512GB) and it's a thoroughbred.
Light, portable, very nice HD screen, very responsive and fluid, runs the full version of Office, and easily runs some pretty heavy-duty simulation software I use for work.
I'm currently writing a book on mine and the form factor is very comfortable for extended periods of typing. It also sits very comfortably on my lap when I'm in the recliner and using the kickstand.
My battery charge almost always lasts me all day (8-12 hrs); the only exception is with intensive continuous use, then you're probably looking at about 6 hours. The Metro version of IE is very responsive and battery friendly if you use internet a lot.
OneNote is great for taking notes with the stylus. I rarely use a pad and pen anymore when making notes from calls with clients. Instead I use OneNote and am able to save, archive, organize, and retrieve my notes at will and they're with me when my SP3 is with me.
The only drawback I see at this point are some of the Metro apps aren't very polished. But as others have stated, it runs any software a PC will run so it's a moot point for users like me. And the key MUI apps most people would use (calendar, email, browser, contacts, weather, cloud storage, Skype, movies, maps, music, and travel apps) are solid to very good.
edt: It's also well built.

I would urge you to check out the App selection at the Microsoft RT store before considering the Surface 3
