The icon and GWX process alone should not be affecting performance in any way remotely detectable. I have a ASUS G73 laptop, and the GWX icon has not affected anything at all. You must have something else going on.

Have you clicked on it yet? Some of those popups at the bottom of the screen contain a ransom virus.
Several months ago I clicked on one that seemed to be from Microsoft but it wasn't. Clicked on it, it locked my computer, and wanted $99.00 to unlock it.
I called Microsoft customer service instead. They told me it was a ransom virus and said they could remove it - for $99.00. I had no choice but to let them remove it. It took 2 days.

It's MS file. I suspect what is happening is MS is downloading this update the whole time until I remove it.
