I heard 10 home version will install updates like the one that is pestering you about upgrading to 10 automatically with no option to disable them. Sounds awesome.

Remove the Windows update that installed it. Kb ends in 588, 538 or something like that. You'll have to Google it.

To remove the Windows 10 update icon, you need to uninstall Windows Update KB3035583.

The wording from MS that I read is a little vague -- "Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available." and "Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates."

The way it is now, users can choose to A) download and install updates automatically, B) Download but don't install til I'm ready, C) Let me know updates are available but don't download or install, and D) Don't give me any updates or tell me about them at all.

It could just mean home users will have their updates automatically downloaded but not necessarily installed.

Regardless, it's easy to find some things to complain about regarding this policy. However, automatically installing updates for dumb home users who ignore update prompts is a good thing. A not-so-good thing, however, is automatically rebooting their machines in the middle of the night. There's a registry hack that can prevent this -- no idea if it'll work in Win10 or whether it'll be needed.

Click on the up arrows next to the update icon to show hidden icons, and then click customize. Scroll down till you see GWX and then set it to only show notifications. The icon should be gone.

That will only work temporarily, as it will be back after you reboot the computer. They only way to permanently remove it is to uninstall the update.

I just moved it to the recycle bin and haven't seen it since. Maybe I have a magic computer

Hmm, I think you just hid it. Click the arrow next to your taskbar.

As said above, remove KB3035583.

I personally don't care. It's just an icon buried in my task bar. Uses less than 2MB of RAM, no popups/notifications, etc. But I only don't care because I'm getting Windows 10 anyway. I suppose it's just aggravating for anyone who's staying with 7 or 8.

I'm so excited for 10, fell in love with 8.1 after finally converting.

So glad to get 10. For someone coming from Mac/Mobile, Windows 8.1 looks ancient.

Just figured out another quick workaround that will hide the icon without needing to uninstall the Windows update:

Terminate the GWX process in task manager, then go to C:\Windows\System32 and rename the GWX folder to something else (or delete it I guess). Icon and process do not return after reboot.

I renamed the folder instead of deleting it because looking at the config file, this application is apparently going to handle the download, prep, and launch of the upgrade when I'm ready, so I might as well keep it around for convenience.

Sure, but people will complain about anything. It's a free OS upgrade and people are pissed about a notification.

I agree 100%. People accept automatic updates on everything else. Why should they decline Windows OS updates?

Enterprise is obviously different, but Microsoft is addressing that.
