I have a few general questions as I am looking to set up a home theatre system in my house. Just to give you some background - I am in the market for a 5.1 system and looking to stay around $500 (flexible if it's worth it) if possible. I know that isn't very expensive but this is my first house and I'm just looking to get a small system in there to enhance TV, movies and music in the living room.

Should I be looking at an out the box system at this price range or should I piece together a receiver and some speakers?

Where should I spend my money? The receiver or the speakers? My price is flexible with a few hundred dollars if necessary.

What total wattage is sufficient for my needs?

What is the difference with the packages that have a blu ray player built into the receiver? I've noticed I can get more wattage at a similar price point if I look at the blu ray/receiver combo (1000W) as opposed to true receiver and speakers (550/725W). Do you lose sound quality with the blu Ray receiver type deal? Do I need a 1000W? I don't really need a Blu player as I play almost everything over Apple TV.

I won't be playing extremely loud music or anything of that nature. The main use would be to enhance TV viewing.

Really, any help is appreciated as I'm just starting to find my way around the home theatre industry. Also, I don't need a wireless system as the house is already prewired.

Don't pay too much attention to the wattage at that level. It is largely bullshite.

You will definitely get better quality from a true receiver.

You might consider something like this and add a bluray.

It has a true receiver that you can use later if you decide to get better speakers.

I'm no expert but it seems like a nice out the box system. This is the Yamaha. Probably similar for what they are. LINK

I'd get an avr from accessories 4less and get pioneer speakers. At 500 you won't get everything but I'd honestly wait to get the rears until you had enough money. You might can squeeze an AVR, front three pioneers and a Polk sub from Amazon.

avr

towers (each)

center

sub

rears for later

Sorry, links aren't working on Amazon.

It's the pioneer fs52 towers, matching center and Polk owm3 for rears. Polk psw10 sub

Can also sub the towers for the bookshelves for a little cheaper and possibly get the rears.

Thanks for the help. That's very helpful. I am looking to mount the front speakers. Would you recommend the pioneer sp bs 22?

Yes. Those are good too. They will be cheaper too and you could possibly get the rears.

Don't worry about matching the rears with the front's.

I think this exactly what I needed. Figured I could spend similar money and do a better system with a little research. Appreciate it.

Google zeos on Reddit for suggestions on building your system.

I literally picked the same ones suggested on that Reddit thing. Hmm , never seen that page. I don't Reddit.

I usually recommend the f12 sub but it was over budget.

I think I'm going with that set up Hu especially after reading Reddit.

Only concern - are those book shelf speakers going to look odd mounted on the wall? I know it would depend on the room size and all. I guess that's a normal thing where you mount the book shelf speakers?

Do some floating shelves instead of mounting. I believe it'll look better.

Back to square one somewhat. I am afraid mounting those book shelf speakers or putting them on a floating shelf may look weird. Is there any other suggestion of what I should do?

The house was prewired and the speaker wire comes out of the wall about a foot away from the ceiling. So really not sure what I should do? Smaller speakers?

Polk owm3 or 5. Get three for the front three. They come in white so they look good

The owm5 would be a better choice up front and get three but if budget is not enough owm3 will do alright.

That's my initial thought but I can adjust for you once you respond.
