Hobbyists and makers: where do you get your components?

Amazon?
Radio Shack? (Lol)
Mouser?
Jameco?
I've got a lot of ideas swimming in my head so I need to get a stockpile of "stuff" so I can start tinkering.

If you're talking about computer components, newegg.com and tigerdirect.com.

Shop for the components on Newegg and when I find what I like, jump over to Amazon to buy it with Prime.
Sometimes the better deal is on NewEgg however.
The layout on NewEgg makes it easier to find exactly what I need and the reviews are more technical, which is what you need.

I get all my electrical components from Mouser.
I get all my computer stuff from Amazon, the return policy is just too good.

I'm talking more like resistors, capacitors, transistors, and what-not. Gotta find something to occupy my time so I don't get into trouble.

Radio Shack catalog or Newark Electric (newark.com).
Locally try Southern Electronics on Scenic Highway.

Agreed on the search feature (I like the comparison tool, especially on motherboards), but Newegg reviews are still full of misinformation as a whole. Maybe better than Amazon, but still a dangerous source for an accurate overview of product facts and quality.

not totally the same but Tindie (like etsy for gadgets and stuff) and Phidgets are cool sites

First thing I would suggest is to get a basic set of electronic components so you hopefully have all the basic stuff already. Buy things like resistor sets that contain all the common resistances, etc.
I use Mouser and eBay depending on how long I can wait for it and the prices. eBay has a LOT of electronic components in bulk for very very cheap from China.
I'll go to Radio Shack if I need a component now, but otherwise I stay far away. This is why you want to have a basic set of stuff first. You don't want to find that you need some basic component for your work but you either have to spend out the arse at Radio Shack or wait a week for something to arrive from China. It's definitely affected my motivation on some of my projects in the past.
Does anyone know of local places in New Orleans and/or Baton Rouge that have this type of shite and aren't extremely expensive like Radio Shack?

If there are any in Baton Rouge it would be news to me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I don't think I'll be so desperate to need to go to RS or another local store.
Other than a variety of resistors, diodes, and capacitors, what would you suggest having as part of my "tackle box"?

I guess it depends on what you like to work on. Soldering iron with various tips, desoldering braid, cleaning solution, etc. Breadboard(s)/PCB(s), etching solution, switches. I also keep a conductive "ink" pen. I'm the type who will use that kind of stuff on a whim, and not very often, so I don't keep much of an arsenal. When I do decide to do something, I'll probably wind up at Radio Shack for one thing or another anyway.

I like to tinker with guitar/analog/synth effect pedals and mess around with arduino/raspberry pi projects.
So I also have transistors, potentiometers, variety of ICs (555, 4558, lm308, etc.), 1/4 inch male and female jacks, 22 awg solid core wire in different colors for breadboard.
