Have $160 in gift cards to Office Depot..

We have issues with WiFi connection reliability and signal strength throughout our house. Currently have a Linksys AC1200 router (the flat one with internal antennas) and the Cox issue 8x4 cable modem that's probably 8 years old.

My thought was that an upgrade to a modem with 16 downstream channels may alleviate some of the congestion on our network. Something like the Arris SB6183.

Would I be better off:

1. Upgrade modem + slight upgrade in router
2. Upgrade router only, to something like the TPLink C3200 with tri-band
3. Get a modem+router combo like the Arris SBG6900

I'll hang up and listen, thanks

Upgrade modem now. Take savings from not paying modem rental for a few months, add that to balance of gift cards to upgrade router.

I don't think anyone on here ever recommends getting a combo modem router.

Good to know..

Cox tech forgot to update account with modem rental .. so no rental fees

If that's the case, then have you done speed test connecting directly to the modem? If you are getting the speeds that you paid for that way, then getting a new modem won't be of much help. Go for a new router first.

Speeds are pretty solid when wired directly.. but when we hit the congested evening hours and my wife has 6 devices all scrolling Pinterest non-stop, the whole network seems to become unreliable. Not just speed but also signal dropping in and out, etc. Was thinking maybe a 16x4 modem would be of some help there because of the additional bonded channels

I'm not cable modem expert since I have fiber, but I would think that if you are getting the speed you are paying for when hardwired, then upgrading the modem won't do anything. The router is your bottleneck. I may be wrong though.

I think this confirms its not your modem. I think the old 8x4 modems are still capable of 100mbps, which is more speed than anyone really needs.

I'd try a new router and see if that solves the issue (if it doesn't, you can probably return it)
