Help me buy a new laptop

I'm looking for something simple and cheap. I'm getting a desktop so I'm really just looking for something small for web surfing around the house.
Two things I'm looking for is a good battery life and potentially something I could watch movies on while traveling.
I'm sure this thread has been done 1000 times but searching didn't give me much help. I appreciate any and all recs

Why not a tablet?
If you need a laptop for work applications when traveling almost anything will work. I would spend the extra to go with an SSD though.

I'd rather a keyboard than a touch screen

Under $500 I'd go with an Asus with the very least a Core i3 processor. You'll be happier with a Core i5 but what you'll be spending for it you'll be close enough to just shell out a couple hundred more for the MacBook Air which would be my choice.
I think HP might have a couple models with i5 for around $500

Joke right? The Air has not been updated in like 3 years. Might as well find some 3 year old ASUS on eBay to match the specs of the Air.

Should have added to the OP that I don't want a Mac

11" and 13" Chromebooks range between $150 and $300.

Yeah, it sounds like a chromebook might be right up your alley.

Thanks fellas. That may be what I'm looking for. I was thinking Windows but I'll have to look into a chromebook for that price.

Decided on an Acer 2 in 1 chromebook, perfect for what I need. Thanks guys

Gonna hijack this post. I'm looking for a laptop as well not interested in a tablet. Mostly using for work (excel, Word, emails), pictures, online trading/options accounts something fast. TIA
