I just bought a new 4K Sony. The guy at the store said I needed new HDMI cables that are comparable for 4K.
Is he full of bull or did I need these. I currently have rocket fish G1167

Everything in the chain has to support 4K.
The TV, the cables, any source device, also your receiver if you have one.
This is the reason I have not bought a 4K TV yet. I am waiting for the new XBox next year to upgrade my TV, Receive, etc...
The cable you listed does not support 4K
Do NOT buy cables from a big box store.
Buy from Monoprice or Amazon.

Just curious, why?
Feel free to talk to me like I am an idiot. I am really ignorant in this respect

Cables at big box stores are typically grossly overpriced.
HDMI is HDMI. The cables transmit 1s and 0s. Those 1s and 0s will either get their or they won't.
Some cables have better build quality than others, meaning they might look nicer or fell better, but the actual signal quality will be unaffected.

So yes on 4K cables but don't over pay at Best Buy.

You will almost certainly be fine. He's just trying to upsell by default. More on HDMI cables here:

The HDMI Premium cert is new. Cables bearing the mark were tested at 18 Gbps. High Speed cables were tested at 10 Gbps, but this doesn't come close to meaning they won't work properly at the higher rate. Checking Monoprice, the HDMI Premium 6' cable costs about the same as I paid 8 years ago for High Speed, less than $5. I wouldn't pay more!

Everything I've read and heard is that HDMI is HDMI. Don't let (especially Best Buy) stores talk you into buying $100 cords.

As said before, HDMI is a digital signal. It either works or doesn't, signal quality bullshite is useless and so super expensive gold plated monster cables are a gigantic waste of money. Monoprice cables are great build quality and durable, anyone who pays above that price is getting scammed for short run HDMI.

Don't risk it if you just bought 4k, go for the premium 18gb cables at monoprice.. Well worth the $4

Needing hdmi cables as well. Not to hijack the thread but is in wall hdmi cables really needed, or just put regular cables in the wall? Also, what brand of cable on amazon has worked good for one of you?

From my experience, I would suggest going with a thicker gauge cable for in-wall installations. I personally used a regular HDMI cable while I was running surround at the house and it got sliced while pulling. Had to pull the cable out and inspect to find that it drug across a screw probably and got severed. That is the chance you will take running thin cables in the attic etc etc
