Brillo and Weave sound pretty sweet. Let's just hope it's all open enough that anybody can hack stuff together that will integrate nicely.

Now on Tap. Hold the home button in any app, and Now pulls up cards relevant to what you're looking at. Works in any app with no modifications.

Now On Tap with contextual search seems pretty awesome.

Photos looks impressive as hell too
Edit: Unlimited Photo upload too!

I'm at work and somewhat unable to follow along. Are there no Project Ara updates? I'm somewhat surprised if so.

Not able to pay attention to this today, wrapping up a project at work. Is the unlimited photo thing new? I know you can already upload unlimited "reduced size" photos. Is that now extended to any size?

It's a new program called Google Photos. It is supposed to be available later today.

Great Keynote. Makes me happy to be a Android user. M looks awesome and Now on Tap with the new Photos rounds it out nicely.
Can't wait to flash it.

I ran back through the Verge link above (Thanks to the OP). What strikes me...
- They announced some things that they already announced before. Nothing huge but just a habit I saw play out several times. Not sure why.
- The screen caps of the Photos app look incredibly derivative of the Photos app on iOS. Which has been around for a good long while now. Folks will pounce on this and eviscerate me for saying it. More than likely it'll be because I'm honestly not that far off. Looks like Google's Android is moving towards iOS in some respects just as folks always complain iOS does towards Android.
(Pause for angry, spite-filled, venom-laced responses to be written out)
- WTF is Ara at? When are they going to debut it? It's been in Google Labs waaaaaaaay longer than most of their stuff is supposed to be. What's the deal, Google? I'm genuinely excited for this tech. It has the potential to be a reason to consider switching handset brands in my honest opinion.

Yeah, you'll get some hate, but here's the reality: To the consumer, it should only matter who does it better, not who did it first. Or, more specifically, it matters how judiciously things are copied. I switched to Android for a reason, but it doesn't mean everything I left behind at Apple was inferior. If Google steals more of the things I liked and fewer of the things I disliked, this is good for me, the consumer.

New Photos App
-It's best features are being able to search and see faces, locations, etc. and the unlimited backup
-The unlimited backup is up to 16MP per photo
- Now On Tap was the coolest feature introduced IMO
Online Photos is now live too

quote:Honestly I don't think Ara is for us. I mean, I would like to have one just to tinker with, but I don't think it'll make a big splash with the people who already have smartphones. We like pretty phones, and we like to buy a new one every couple of years. What's the point in a modular/upgradeable device if every single component needs to be upgraded every two years? I think it's a great idea, and I think we might see some specialized uses here (dual cameras for 3D pics and videos, mega zoom lenses, the ability to pop an extra battery in place of wifi/bluetooth for a long day hike, devices and sensors for specialized fields, etc), but I don't see them replacing daily driver smartphones for many people. I think it's more of a low cost entry level phone for the billions of people who don't have them already.

As for what's taking so long... it takes a while to settle on a form factor that's intended to be used by billions of people for many years. Also I think there are regulatory hurdles in regards to the device being modular rather than a single configuration to be approved.

How far ahead Google is in this area to Apple and Microsoft really can't be overstated.
