Having a kid soon and wanted a decent camera. Guy at work was selling a 6 month old Cannon rebel t3i. Came with a cannon 55-250 lens, 18-55 lens, and a 'Nifty Fifty' lens. Also came with an SD card and bag. Paid 600. Kind of an impulse buy. Don't know much about cameras, but quick research made me think it was a decent deal.

I bet his kid was born 6 months ago.

For baby pics a DSLR is overkill. Your phone camera will do fine.

A DSLR won't make a badly-composed picture any better, you have to know how to take good shots with *any* camera first.

My dad taught photography for many years, so I'll get some pointers from him on the way to get good shots. I'm vaguely familiar with aperture and shutter speed and whatnot. I by no means know what I'm doing, but I can learn that. My dad taught mostly in the era of 35mm film, so he's not much of a resource when it comes to newer digital cameras. Plus he's a cheapo, so he'd call me crazy for spending $600 no matter what.

I just made an offer to the guy based on prices I saw for this particular model. I have no idea if there was a better bang for my buck out there. Doesn't really matter now, was just curious.

Your offer probably is a fine deal - *if* you know how to shoot, play in Photoshop, etc.

But this tells me otherwise.

SLR's really are better cameras but your basic phone camera is perfectly fine for "memory" shots. In the hands of a skilled photographer who already knows aperture and exposure, and knows when to override the auto setting and exactly how, a DSLR will be better. Otherwise you're wasting money.

Thanks for the help. I totally agree that this is overkill to take pics of just the kid playing in the back yard. This will be used for more than that hopefully.

I've always been the type of person to really research and learn something when I start the hobby. I like to have decent quality things if I feel like I'll really get into it. I've wasted thousands on fishing gear if you talk to my wife for example , but I've got some really good equipment I got at great deals. I've even made a profit on selling some of it used. Obviously didn't do the research with this purchase, but that was kind of an in the moment deal. I've already read about a 3rd of the manual, and started reading some digital photography basics articles. It will be a long time before I have the knowledge to make it worth overriding the auto settings, but I hope this platform is something that can help me learn.

Normally I tell people they are better off with a high-end point and shoot to learn on. They cost less but still offer the same settings a SLR does, it'll give you a good learning experience so you can figure out what features you want on an SLR if you do decide to move up.

But if you only paid $600, rock what you have, that's a nice deal.

You paid a little too much. Mom got the same deal for $499.

Yeah, I just checked and prices have come down a bit. You can buy that whole kit new from B&H Photo for about $600.

ETA: And now TD's page is serving me B&H Photo ads. Nice.

I bought my T3 in 2012 for $630 and that included an 18-55 lens and a 55-250 lens. Plus the bag, a tripod, and a 16gb SD card...

I think for a used camera you could have gotten a better deal but it's not unreasonably high.

I've used it for graduations for friends and for LSU Basketball. I've gotten some great shots with it and you really can take some great pictures with it. Just play around. Take it outside and just shoot pictures. Change settings and see what you think. It can be a really fun hobby to learn.

Just went sit with my dad. I've got some things to build off of. He gave me some common shutter speeds and f-stops to start with and a few other tips to start.

As far as the price, I don't think I got ripped off, but I definitely didn't get a great deal. It's only 6 months old and was barely taken out of the bag, so I'm not too worried about the used vs just buying new. Such a variance in prices online though, especially comparing individual items to buying packages.

If it was me (read just my opinion) I'd sell the two kit lenses on eBay and keep just the 50mm. Learn with that. I'm assuming by "nifty fifty" it's the 1.8. In my opinion it's the best low cost lens around and can be replaced used for $50 or less if you ever damage it.

The TXi's are great little bodies for the price (you paid too much but not by a lot)

I prefer working with primes or zooms with a constant aperture ($). The prime will force you to move your body to compose the shot you want and again, IMO, is the best way to learn.
A 35mm 2.0 is another prime that can be had with expense and for your crop, is a perfect combo. I also love the little 40mm pancake, it's a sweet little piece of glass and allows my to carry my 7d or 6d in a smaller package which is really nice for walks/hikes and shooting landscape.

Congrats on your purchase and have fun!
