Please recommend an external hard drive that's 1+TB that will work good, last long time. Something not completely outrageously expensive would be appreciated.

I'm tried of just backing up to Google Drive and allowing Google to have unlimited access to all my most sensitive items.

I have seagate and western digital. Pretty cheap but you cant expect anything to last a long time. Back up in several places ALWAYS

If you look around or wait you could probably get one around 35 bucks for 1tb.

I just picked up a MYCLOUD WD at a local walmart that was on clearance (2tb) for 35 bucks and use it as a network drive to share and store my docs wherever I am. I am also using it to stream through plex

I own 3 of each

My current external is a seagate backup plus 4tb. I've used it for around a year and a half so far with no issues. If you want to go smaller look for an Amazon Warehouse deal on a seagate or western digital.

Once you connect a single-volume external RAID array to your PC or Mac, it will show up and act as any other external drive. After that, it can become more complex. You should consider a drive with support for RAID levels 1, 5, or 10 if you're storing really important data that you can't afford to lose. There are other RAID levels for speed, capacity, and other factors like software vs. hardware RAID.

Seagate backup plus

I use this and bar non, have experienced the best useage on all RAID levels.

Just picked up a western digital my passport ultra. Usb 3.0. Works well so far. Approximately $60 for 1 tb.

I've had extremely good success with Western Digital Passport drives. I've got a couple of them that are several years old (USB3 probably 2009-2010 for one and 2012 for the other). Paid in the $100 range for one and closer to 70 for the second. Best Buy has 1 TB WD Passport on sale for $60 and 2 TB for $100 right now.

Always a good idea. I was thinking portability but rereading his OP, I think that is not a real consideration. A larger HD in a powered case (not USB powered) is generally cheaper per memory unit.

I think portability is a little overrated because even a large sized HD is pretty easily transported. This will solely be for at home use in a fairly static location.

Portability has been significant for me in the past, travelled a lot for work. The size of the drive was not the issue, it was having a separated power supply or even cord to carry. Given that USB powered was a must. For your application it isn't and that's where I generally have seen really good price per GB

I have a 6 year old 1TB MyPassport and a 3 year old 3TB MyBook. My next external is probably going to be the MyPassport wireless pro so I can use it as a Plex server when we travel.

I'm bumping this thread to ask for a recommendation.

I'm looking to set up an external harddrive at home connected to my WiFi.

I'd like to be able to access my pics, etc on my phone while away from home, a personal cloud, I guess.

Anyone got a rig they like?

I've got 2 Seagate 2Tb drives with me in Afghanistan. One full of movies, the other full of TV shows. Paid like 60-70 bucks a piece for them.
