So, the issue is I am running a counterfeit Windows 7 and it's really interfering with my PC performance. I'm going to purchase a genuine copy today and factory reset in order to get rid of any viruses etc.. Once I do the reset, will I be prompted to insert my motherboard installation disc or should I do this beforehand? Also, I don't have my video card driver disc, will that be an issue or is this obtainable from the internet? Very new to PC's so be gentle guys.

If by factory reset, you mean you are wiping the hard drive and installing windows anew... you should download all of your drivers beforehand. This way you won't run into any issues (for example windows not recognizing your network card).

I would suggest downloaded drivers even if you have the discs because the download version will be up-to-date while the discs will not. Just go to the manufacturer websites and look under support for drivers.

Yes, I am doing a clean wipe of the hard drive. I have all of my non-replaceable info stored on an external hard drive to put back on afterwards. I have a handful of 4.7GB DVD-R's. You're saying I should go to each manufacturer site and put the drivers on these disc as a backup?

get some cd-rom based drive utilities
low level format your HD (to map out any potential bad sectors)
install windows 7 VANILLA
most drivers will naturally get picked up
for anything fancy (like videocard, etc) you might want to get the more updated drivers from them on the web

then IMAGE YOUR DRIVE and store that.

this will be the fastest your computer will run

Just to clarify, windows 7 loader "activates" windows for you so that you don't have all those ridiculous "counterfeit software" pop ups and the black desktop. I use it all the time and it's awesome.

When you say counterfeit, did you download it from somewhere questionable, or did you install from Windows 7 disc and not have the activation code? If it's a good copy of Windows, then you can simply change the product key with the one you purchased, and don't need to do any re-installation.

That's a good point. I always use the .iso's from the microsoft site, and then activate them for free.

Its always best to replace the virus that you wipe when formatting...

"But I don't have a virus"

Then why wipe it...Just get a key and activate it..

ETA: Someone in the office got hit with CryptoWall this morning...I'm cranky...
