I want to get rid of Directv and am wondering what the best options are.

The wife and I both of Macs, should I get apple tv to stream stuff or would Roku be better?

What HD antennas should I look at for local channels?

The wife watches a bunch of stuff on Bravo(don't get me started), where can she find those shows?

We have Century Link for internet and plan on keeping that.

Thanks

I think this is what prevents most people from cutting the cord.

I just bought a Simple.TV from W00t that came with a lifetime subscription to Simple.TV premier service for $100 total. You need to provide a hard drive and antenna. I use the Mohu Leaf for my antenna and have 30 channels. I am canceling my cable today. Simple.TV is basically a very easy DVR for over the air channels. You can view live TV or your recordings anywhere on phone, tablet, or computer. To view on TV you need to AirPlay through an iOS app to AppleTV or Roku has it's own channel. The Simple.TV is really easy to search for shows or set it to record series. So far I haven't had a problem. The only issue is the fast forwarding does not include a preview, so you can guess or watch commercials.

Answering your questions:

We have only Macs and iDevices, but I would buy a Roku 3 unless you have already bought a huge iTunes library of movies and shows. Honestly, I would wait because the AppleTV hasn't been updated in 2 years and I bet will be updated when Apple releases the iWatch early this year. I predict this update based on rumblings that the AppleTV will be the hub for Apple's Home Automation system. (Current AppleTV can not fill this role because it is running Apple's A5 chip and the iPhone 6 has an A8 chip.)

I like my Mohu Leaf as an easy indoor antenna. If you are in suburbs like me (Metairie, LA) than it should pick up all you want.

Bravo can be viewed online with a Cable Login, you can AirPlay through the iOS app to AppleTV, buy episodes with the money saved through Amazon or iTunes (based on which box you buy), or Hulu has some offerings.

Agreed. I'm all for cutting it, but my SO doesn't want me to because of "what will we do when people are over? We'll have to find something to put on!!!" and that we just got into TNT's show "The Librarians", and it's not available on Hulu+

Gracias. God I fricking hate Bravo! I tried lowering our Directv subscription to a cheaper tier that didn't include Bravo and I thought the wife was going to burn the fricking house down.

Bravo has one show that I enjoy (Top Chef). The rest is pure garbage.

Look into SlingTV and use an HD Antenna for local stations. If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, get the FireTV, otherwise, I would go with Roku. I have no answer for Bravo except torrents

If you're serious about cutting cable tell her to suck it up and move on. Get Hulu Plus and Amazon and she'll find a whole new group of shows to fall in love with.

This. We got rid of cable beginning of December, already was paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime (for shipping). Picked up a FireTV stick and added Hulu+. Wife is home on maternity leave, still has TONS to watch and has gotten into new shows because of it. I swap Netflix and Prime passwords for a friends Cox login to get watchespn, which I still will only use for football season or LSU games. Done deal.

that's a pretty good idea. I use my parents account for that. My mom had no idea why I was making her create an online account , not like they care though.

Eta: it was a no brainer for me as I rarely watched anything but sports on TV. I actually watch more TV shows now with Netflix than I ever did because they have much better stuff. My Gf also has so many shows at her disposal now it's probably worse than having cable. She constantly has something streaming.

I'm paying $137 a month for Directv right now. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime already so even if I bought some equipment and paid another $20-30 a month in subscriptions, I'd come out ahead in no time. Only thing I will miss is the Nuggets games but I can listen to those on the radio or hit up the bar with the $$$ we'll save. I hate Bravo and think if you watch that shite it makes you a bad person, but the wife is sticking to her guns about it. I am going to set up a couple of the tvs direct free and see if I can get the ball rolling from there.....

Get someone who has Bravo on cable or satellite to set up a Bravo account and then share the password. If the addiction is genetic her mama or sister will do that for you. Otherwise ask her if that dreck is worth a hundred bucks a month.

BTW, I'm almost two years cable free and have a better viewing experience than ever and the SO is content. Total $7.99 a month for Hulu Plus. I already had amazon for the free shipping. I spent about $1800 remodeling an unfinished closet and having the house wired with Cat5e and adding the tuners for OTA. It's already paid for itself.

ordering this now. I have my folks and sisters Cox logins to get all the Bravo shite plus ESPN and what not. I've had a good long affair with Directv but with how high the prices are now and after the email I got saying its going up...I'm done.

Should I hook up an outdoor antenna and just patch it into my coax cable that directv is using, or should I buy indoor antennas for each tv? I live about 15 miles from downtown Denver.

Either one will probably work depending on the topography between you and the stations but your best reception will be with a traditional antenna mounted in the attic.

I cut cable 10 months ago and bought a xbmc android box. More TV and movies than you could ever imagine. I pay for nothing. No fees. All you need is WiFi. I've saved $1300.00 so far. Watched American Sniper last weekend in HD. Good stuff.
