But I only see that kind of speed if connected to the 5ghz network on my router.

When connected on 2.4ghz i get about 12mbps.

Wtf.. Is that right? If so then I'm not buying another Chromecast until they support 5ghz wifi.

A couple of things. 5GHz is going to be able to achieve faster speeds than 2.4. I have a new home router and the 2.4GHz cannot max out my 75Mbps while my 5GHz does it with ease. It's just the laws of physics. That said, 12Mbps is low even for 2.4GHz.

Also, I don't have a chromecast but I thought it was just a remote display for a device like a phone that was doing the actual streaming. You may be getting LAN speeds faster than 12Mbps on the 2.4 but speedtests show lower.

Did they give you a new home router? FWIW, 12 Mbps should be enough to stream HD

2.4ghz 802.11B can support up to 11mbps

2.4ghz 802.11G can support up to 54mbps

2.4ghz 802.11n (least common) can support up to 300mbps

But it all depends on the quality of your wireless signal.

Wireless sucks. Plain and simple. I only use Wifi when I have to.

Well if you are on 802.11B that is all you are going to get.

Do you have ANY 802.11b clients connected? Some old device laying around the house? When it comes to wireless, once a device of an older standard connects to the BSSID, all clients connected to the BSSID can suffer regardless of their capabilities.
