They have a special that waives that.. But 2GB of data with the risk of getting tagged for more money if you go over isn't worth it for me. Would not mind if they just throttled you like the MVNO's do but the overage fee I don't care for.
If you go over your limit, it is simply is the next step up which is like 10 or 20$ more a month it isn't that bad.
Verizon has an app for the iPhone where you can easily see how much data you have used, also if you get close it warns you that you have used 90% of your data for the month.

Im outraged by the cost of service. People are getting raped by the major carriers. New Phone or not. 180 a month for 10gb of data shared? Seriously?
Should be no higher than 140 a month with a new phone. Inclusive of ALL taxes and fees.

I mean how does the MVNOs charge so far less to ride the same cell towers?
My true cost since I own 2 nexus 4 deviced over 2 years is 2760 for 6gb of data between the two phone. That's a total of 115 month including all taxes and fees for the same service I had with ATT. But ATT wants 180?? $1560 more over 2 years??

Man my AT&T contract is up in November, I'm not sure I want to sign up for 2 more years. I already pay 110 for a single line

Im in the same boat, Ive been granfathered in with unlimited data, but it's not worth it anymore.

my family shares 6GB of data, If I was on a single payer plan I may need 3GB. I'm pretty sure unlimited is a trap to get people to pay carries more money, when you don't really need it.
My biggest data usage is iTunes match when I use it on the road, or if I watch a few minuets of streaming things, but I always stick with wifi.
You can save money by limiting the amount of data you get.
here is Verizon's data calculator it doesn't say what the costs are but you can figure out how much data you use on your phone.
LINK
according to this 4 things can really send up your data
1) websites
2) photo uploading and downloading
3) videos
4) streaming music.
There are easy ways to reduce data on this.
1) don't use your phone outside of wifi, always do your best to hook up to wifi if you are out and about and need to access websites.
2) Change settings to only allow your phone to upload to the cloud when connected to wifi.
3) only watch videos on wifi.
4) if you have a service like iTunes match, instead of streaming while on the road, download when connected to wifi. Don't use iTunes radio on LTE.
I think you can easily keep your data limited to 2GB a month if you are careful about how you use your data.

just did some quick research
Verizon allows you to have a 60$ a month single line plan. Unlimited text and calls plus 2GB of data.
if you want more than you have to pay a smartphone fee 40$ a month, plus what ever you want to add for data.
what ever Verizon edge is can knock off 10 bucks off your monthly bill.
The single plan is only 60$ only if there are hidden fees I can't find. Every GB you go over is 15$ more. The issue with this is that you are stuck with this one plan, it has no flexibility. The more everything plan has flexibility but you will pay 20-30 bucks more for the plan as an individual.

Honestly, paying 90 bucks for 4gb of data (when you go over) doesn't even sound like too bad of a deal compared to the options

Verizon is much better
and I have a HTC One for Verizon I can sell you

90 bucks is for 2GB.
I'll explain quickly
For the more everything plan it is 40$ per phone. So individual that is 40 bucks for a smart phone, plus these options of data coverage
250 MB 15$
500 BM 30$
1 GB 40$
2 GB 50$
3 GB 60$
4 GB 70$
6 GB 80$
8 GB 90$
10 GB 100$
So what you do is you take the number of phones and type and than add one of the options above.
Verizon offers a cheeper plan for single users, unlimited phone and text plus 2GB of data for 60$. So pretty much they are giving you a discount on data to be inflexible with how much you get.
ATT has something similar but slightly different which hurts the individual user.
You can do 65$ a month but you can't have a two year contract. If you want a 2 year contract it's 80 dollars a month. The catch with the 65$ a month plan is that you have to pay for the phone yourself (full price) either all at once or month to month. So you will probably end up paying about the same price anyway. From what I can tell you can pay the 200$ up front on your contract upgrade days. (assuming you buy the iPhone 6)
Verizon seems to have the better pricing deal for a single user, I haven't looked into family usage.
Edit: verizon does have hidden fees I don't know what they are exactly but at-least for my parents and I we have about 30$ more than the advertised price of our plan.

60 bucks for 2gb individual plan
+15 overage for 1GB

4GB = 90 bucks

ok I got it know thanks
I'm still interested why Verizon would do this, they are clearly losing money by allowing people to have this individual plan. I wonder if in the fine print they have some thing that says if you go over X number of times we will increase your monthly payment.

Okay, I went into AT&T today to put my sister and her husband on my family plan. For 4 lines, we will be paying $180 for 30 gb of data, unlimited talk and text. I will also be adding my parents to my plan. It will end up being about $35 per line for everything plus whatever next phone they have.
Just find a friend that you trust to pay you and yall start a family plan.

I am on that 60.00 single line plan from Verizon. I started with the same plan when it was 1GB and when they offered the 2GB plan I went in and they switched it no problem. With 10.00 per month insurance added I pay 74.00 per month with auto pay. I have yet to go over on data so I am not sure if extra fees apply, but since I use wifi 99% of the time I have no problems. Hope this helps.

FWIW I talked to someone from Verizon yesterday, they said the 60$/mo deal for the single line plan ends on the 15th. After that they will be raising it up to 75$. But if you get it under contract before then, you are locked into that rate as long as you keep renewing the contract.
