While using the Chromecast, does your computer or smart phone have to be playing what you are watching on TV?

Which one of these devices is the best? Or are they all basically the same?

I think it would heavily depends on your ecosystem.

If you're a Google/Android person, Chromecast is probably your default choice. If you're Apple - need I say more?

I'm a Droid guy, and also a Amazon/Kindle guy - so I might be torn.

Google also has Nexus Player and Android TV - but I'm not certain about those going forward.

Cnet likes Roku best. It seems to have the most apps, if that's important to you.

But, I still say that you end up going with the one most tied to your ecosystem - if you disagree with that, Roku is probably the right choice.

I disagree..I returned my Chromecast for a Roku stick because the idea of having to "send content to it" sucked...

The sticks essentially run indepently

Thanks for the info.

I have a Sumsung Galaxy phone and use Chrome on my computer at the house so I guess that would mean that I should get the Chromecast.

My concern with Chromecast is that in a review I was reading it made it sound like you had to be watching the same program on the TV and computer/smart phone. I don't know if that is true but I would rather not have to do that.

The Roku actually comes with a remote control so I don't think you would have to use your computer to use it.

So the Roku and Fire have apps that play shows independently..Netflix, Hulu, etc. and a remote to get there

Chromecast essentially mirrors your phone, tablet...

Your phone/tablet/laptop is your remote. There's a cast button on a lot of apps that you can "cast" whatever that app is playing to the chromecast

This is not the case. As a matter of fact, you can turn off your phone completely and it will continue to play on the TV. You can "mirror" your phone screen, but this is not how most content is accessed.

I understand what you're saying - I think Google might be messing up by confusing people with multiple products - I think their Android TV is the direct competing product to Roku, Fire Stick and Apple TV, while the Chromecast was intended to expand on the smartphone's capability.

I would probably go Roku or Fire, but each choice will be individual - and I remain convinced that you at least start at your preferred ecosystem and only deviate for cause.

How is the Roku stick powered? The chromecast has a USB plug or wall plug.

Yes; however, I frequently had issues with remaining control of the content after switching to a different app or turning the phone off... I much prefer the roku to the chromecast and and the Amazon stick to the chromecast

I felt the same but got the Fire Stick and returned Chromecast. Loaded Kodi (XBMC) and it is much better than the Chromecast.

yes. the phone/tablet only acts as the remote for build-in apps.

I have a major gripe with my roku(well Cox is probably the the reason) now. It won't let me watch secn+ games because my cable subscription is linked to it and realizes I don't have that tier. However my Samsung Galaxy s5 active can chromecast the secn+ games perfectly. And you can switch apps and post in game to TD.com, diddle on fb, take a phone call, etc without a blip in quality.
Anyone know how to make roku work for secn+ without paying for it on Cox as well?

I would rank them like this based off my experience with them.

Fire Stick
Roku
Chromecast

This....but I got fire tv so I could plug my cat6 into it and optical audio into my surround sound. Also has an hdmi to my television. And I installed TVMC which is xbmc but with many popular add ons already installed and configured. I have only added sportsdevil to what was already pre installed.

Weird to see all the hate for the Chromecast. It works perfectly for me, but the apps it does not natively support are not ones I use anyway. I use it for Youtube, Netflix, Plex, and Popcorn Time, and it's flawless.
