I actually have very few albums because it does such a great job of automatically grouping photos by event and by person, and like I said the image recognition is pretty good also.
How do you manage the source files (the actual digital file you have on your machine, or do you?). Do you just drop it inside a massive folder for each year, month, etc.?
One problem I have had, is that I take a lot of photos with my camera, and also with my phone (and my wife's phone, who hand it to me a few times a year and says she has no space), so this seems to help with that.
ETA: Follow up, do pics from your phone ever even make it to your "hard" storage, or do they go from phone to cloud and that's it?

I organize photos by year. They are also cataloged in Adobe Lightroom.

I am uploading some pics now.
I can't tell yet, but is it going to same to assume that pictures are not going to be grouped by year inside of google photos?
It seems like it may be difficult to find a picture from 2005 (I guess the exif can find all 2005) that was taken at "party at john's house" if I don't know the date. Where as before, I can go inside by 2005 folder and find the sub folder called "2005.09.02 Part at Johns".
Anyone had any issues or work around with this kind of thing?

Is there any way to sort these folders?

All of my photos are taken with my phone, so they are all sorted by date anyway. If you are uploading using the desktop app, I'm really not sure if they will be sorted by date or filename. But, your photos are linked to your google drive, and you can sort them into folders there.

Yeah, makes sense. I am currently backing up all my pre-iPhone photos, I suspect those will be easy to keep track of.
I am able to create albums, but they aren't sorted in any kind of order (the albums themselves). Seems odd that google would have overlooked this.

Apparently you are way more into photos than I am because I don't care about any of that shite.
Here is my photo backup/management checklist:
1. Are my photos safe from ever being lost?
2. Can I look at and share my photos?
Anything past that is a bonus for me.

agree with kork
as long as the date timestamp is accurate (and they all seem to be) then i'm not real worried about anything else.
i can quickly go back to any year...but then i was a google picasa whore for years before i bought into the cloud shite and the UI is very very similar.
