I am looking into this for the new theater build. I will want to control can lights, track lights, A/V switching from the pre/pro and projector back to 2-channel audio, and the motors for the 2 blackout shades for the windows, and the screen motor. I may also want to control the low voltage lights that will be installed in the cabinets and bookcases at the rear.

The room will be 21'x18'x9'.

Any other suggestions to look at?

Any other things I may be overlooking?

CAD doesn't know crap about distributed audio, video, and theater.

He knows how to make his lights change colors when his mail get dropped off. He thinks Contol4 is a scam.

At first I thought this was a troll since you seem to know what you are talking about in threads here. Where are you located ? Might as well just call a C4 dealer because it's not a DIY product.

It's probably DIY for Marco.

Not a troll...I usually spend my time over on the Music Board and when I venture over here, CAD is usually talking automation--so I posed my question to him.

I am a hardcore 2-channel audiophile, however, I am now catching up on educating myself on the latest with the tech/control/automation side of things. In high-end audio, we play with vacuum tubes and ridiculous cables and simple circuits, not the latest tech stuff, per se.

I decided last month to build a dedicated audio room--I am calling it an audio room and not a theater because it will be designed for audio first and video second.

I figured since I am going all the way down to studs and joists, that now is the time to add whatever is needed for a semi-automation. I don't need the system to take a piss for me, but some of the things I mentioned earlier would be nice. I am redoing all lighting and electrical to all 4 walls as well. I am also planning to have 2 motorized Qmotion blackout shades on the 2 windows which I want to automate.

As I said, I can walk the walk regarding the high end of audio gear, but will sure take advice with video and automation (these things really don't play into my niche very often). I am not totally oblivious to this stuff (don't need to be treated like a total tech noobie), but I don't read about it every night like I do audio gear.

I have also been researching projectors the last 6 weeks or so--it's all new to me (I am a firm believer that the Pioneer Elite Kuro plasma is still the best panel ever made )...and am learning the entire video/projector/scaling/pull down/frame rate world now.

As I said, I am not a videophile, so I will probably do a Sony or JVC HD projector. I will entertain a 4K projector/HDR if they begin to approach the $8k range--as of now they are running around $15k!!. I do realize that Epson, Sony, and JVC are all expected to drop new 4K projectors around October or November 2017, so I may wait to see if they hit that price point. I will also install a motorized, tensioned 109" screen (suggestions?--$3-4k range).

I will primarily watch streamed live music concerts, college sports over Cox cable, and the occasional Netflix stream. I just don't watch many movies--I listen to music instead. That said, however, my mind may change after I experience a well put together projector/screen/room...which is why I am asking for a little advice.

If you or anyone has suggestions of things to look at, I am open to them.

Appreciate the responses.

I am in Greater New Orleans, FWIW.

I know Jayson, Lloyd, and Richard well. All my McIntosh gear was purchased from Uptown Audio. Rich is coming here on Tuesday for a consult. I just wanted to get a little info on some options available for automation.

Research Qmotion...light becomes a non issue. Not cheap, but damn near 100% light block.

This also gives me the option of listening to music on a Saturday afternoon and not feel like I am in a cave.

So you just want to automate this one room ? If so then a full blown control system like C4 or Savant (uptown installs) might not be needed.

I would do two audio systems if I were you. One for your audiophile gear with your listening chair where you can enjoy a drink and another surround sound system for your video. You already seem to know what you want. Are you doing any of this yourself ? The guys at Uptown are great and can easily do that type job.

Do you still have one ?

Thanks man...

Yes, my main TV is a Kuro 50".

Yes, for now, just that room is to be controlled...but if things can be added, I could be interested.

I am going to run an Anthem pre/pro through my McIntosh c500 pre as it has a theater passthru--thus allowing me to use the main Focal Utopia loudspeakers from my 2-channel rig for 5.1.

I'm sure they'll tell you this but make sure you have a trigger for the screen. I'd go with a tab tensioned Stewart Filmscreens screen. There is no better.

What pre/pro combo and what speakers are you looking at? I should update my theater but I simply don't have time and the travel budget seems to take precedence these days.

ETA: I'd take a look at Crestron for control. It's miles above Control 4 IMO.

As far as the Pre/pro goes--probably the Anthem D2v or McIntosh MX 122. I will probably use a 3 or 5 channel amp from whatever manufacturer buy the pre/pro from.

I only need to power the center (probably a Focal Viva Utopia) and rears (Focal Electra Berryllium in-wall) as I will use the theater bypass mode on my audio pre amp for unity gain...so I only need a 3-channel amp (McIntosh MC 301 or Anthem A5). I am using Focal Utopias for the mains being driven by a pair of McIntosh MC 501 mono blocs.

And thanks for the Crestron recommendation...I will read up on it tonight...(This is just the kind of info I was requesting with this post!!)

Since I can't do an in-ceiling mount for the screen, (it will run the across 5 or 6 of the ceiling joists--I will have to do a ceiling mount, but not a big deal. I plan on having a casing built of drywall to hide the entire mechanism.

This is what I have found... LINK

It's good stuff. I don't have a Firehawk and the blacks on my screen are excellent. I used to have a CRT but switched to digital about five years ago. I have a tab tensioned StudioTek 130 and love it.

Let me know if you want to talk about what I did for my custom home theater. We have similar taste and budgets. Mine was completed in December. All McIntosh gear (MX122), Oppo UHD 203, and the new Sony 4k projector (675es).

I ended up going with URC's Total Control. The "brain" is the MRX-10. The local dealer here (AVX) sells and installs Savant, URC, and Control 4. I looked at all of them and went with URC, which was their favorite too.

URC

Here's a couple pics of the install. The 2nd and 3rd pic are of the AV closet off the theater. In the 3rd pic, the URC MRX-10 is the one with the solid blue LED light going across the front like a line graph.
