aka, they see you when you're torrenting. they know when you're awake. they know if you've been bad or good...

'cease and desist' letters in your mailbox for having a copy of 'whitehouse down' are much easier and the data caps rolling out across the country thanks to docsis3.

I wasn't trying to recommend the all in one route. Just more or less saying that's how he would do it with one device. Its probably cheaper to go with a good modem and a good router anyways.

I don't think they need Docsis 3 to see what you are doing. They can see that at the port.

quote:

DOCSIS 3.0 - Released August 2006, the specification was revised to significantly increase transmission speeds (this time both upstream and downstream) and introduce support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

Cross-version compatibility has been maintained across all versions of DOCSIS, with the devices falling back to the highest supported version in common between both endpoints: cable modem and cable modem termination system (CMTS). For example, if one has a cable modem that only supports DOCSIS 1.0, and the system is running 2.0, the connection will be established at DOCSIS 1.0 speeds.

As of the end of 2011, the fastest deployments in North America are expected to be Shaw Cable's announced 250 Mbit/s download / 15 Mbit/s upload, which will be implemented in phases, and Videotron's 200 Mbit/s download / 30 Mbit/s upload service in Quebec City,[4] followed by existing 107 Mbit/s deployments in the USA. In 2010, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) urged U.S. providers to make 100 Mbit/s a standard speed available to 100 million households before 2020.[5]

In the UK, broadband provider Virgin Media announced on 20 April 2011 an intention to start trials with download speeds of 1.5 Gbit/s and upload of 150 Mbit/s based on DOCSIS 3.0.

DOCSIS 3.1 - Released October 2013, plans support capacities of at least 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream using 4096 QAM. The new specs will do away with 6 MHz and 8 MHz wide channel spacing and instead use smaller (20 kHz to 50 kHz wide) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers; these can be bonded inside a block spectrum that could end up being about 200 MHz wide.[6]

I was just trying to answer this question:

quote:

but if I buy a modem, can i hook it directly to the coax and stop paying 5.99 to rent each month?

The only way to do that is the combo route.

I assumed

1) He rents both devices and does not own a router

The only way for his statement to hold true is for him to buy a combo modem. Maybe I was being too logical.

If he bought a regular modem and gave back his equipment then he would no longer have wifi. So the only way for him to buy a modem and do everything would be the combo route.

Where I went wrong was I missed this part..

quote:

Also, will be able to use my current wireless router as well?

Hmmm, I may buy one. That's a $80 isn't bad, will pay for itself in a year.

Not a bad deal.....

Not true. I own my Motorola Modem and use a Sonicwall Firewall behind it and a Ubiquiti Networks Access Point

If you previously had a DOCSIS 1 or 2 modem you should notice a slight bump in speed performance as well. Even if you pay for a lower tier.

But he was only asking:

The answer to that is yes. Node/service box outside -> Coax -> purchased modem

That eliminates the rental fee from Cox, like he was hoping it would. After that, it's:

Purchased modem -> ethernet cable -> purchased wireless router -))) client adapters

EDIT: I, too, can vouch for the greatness of the modem that was recommended in this thread.

But they will need to call Cox or whoever the ISP is and give them the info of that new modem for it to work.

Ok.. It was a very simple mistake. I was assuming he had 2 devices that he rented. He asked if he bought a modem could he replace everything.. My statement that the only way he could get that to work the same was the combo route applies to the situation where he was returning two devices. Not sure what your setup has to do with that.

I was illustrating that you don't need a combo.

I simply misinterpreted what you were saying.

fact..but you have to understand what docsis is doing. v3 in layman's terms pinpoint you..the user..as THE user since the additional security layers built in remove many of the older modem exploits used by thieves..but also served to make it more difficult to send out DMCA letters because from a legal standpoint, you could claim someone else was doing the downloading and you've been falsely accused.

IOW, comcast now can say "yes, its colorchange who downloaded that movie" to the MPAA because of all the new 'assurances' built into docsis 3 means they have much higher confidence that torrent is coming from YOUR UNIQUE address.

its way more technical, here's a good read to give you the history of the exploit 'cat and mouse' game cable companies have been playing.

Yeah, doesn't take long to get it provisioned.

Also, OP, and this may not apply to your situation, but my SB6141 shipped with outdated firmware, which I didn't realize until going through several "technicians." I was paying for the 50+mbps package, but I was only getting 25+mbps tier speeds. I thought it was just a mistake in provisioning my modem the first time, but after having them do it two or three times, I started doing my own research and determined the cause.

If you're on one of the higher tier plans, tell Cox to check for updated firmware. You will absolutely need to connect to a level 2 technician (or whatever they call the knowledgeable ones); the low-level techs only know how to reprovision modems and tell you how to reboot your PC and router and modem. If you email help@cox.com you may actually get someone knowledgeable right off the bat. That's what ultimately worked for me to get the newer firmware pushed through.

Is the recommended modem going to be good for a while, meaning is it going to limit my speed if service increase (currenty have 15)

The SB6141? It's rated for speeds 20 times what you're currently paying for.
