I'd rather not rent a modem from Cox. Any recommendations for a cable modem and/or router? I'm thinking it should probably be $80 or so to make it worthwhile.

Would this work with Uverse?

Would love to get away from that extra fee every month.

i mean, its fine. i have one.

nothing spectacular, it works which is what you want.

its also pretty much mandatory (or will be soon in your area) since its docsis3 and comcast/cox/time warner don't want you using docsis < v3.

i fought it for years here in nashville using my ancient docsis1 modem until THEY CUT ME OFF. i was forced to buy a new one.

why is that you ask?

because docsis3 makes alot more of your personal usage habits available to the mothership.

aka, they see you when you're torrenting. they know when you're awake. they know if you've been bad or good...

'cease and desist' letters in your mailbox for having a copy of 'whitehouse down' are much easier and the data caps rolling out across the country thanks to docsis3.

This is a dumb question, but if I buy a modem, can i hook it directly to the coax and stop paying 5.99 to rent each month? Also, will be able to use my current wireless router as well?

exactly.

but you'll probably have to call them when you plug it in and have them 'provision' it or it wont work.

Uverse is VDSL2 or ADSL2+ not cable.

You will need to get a modem that is also a wifi router. Then you would call the cable company and give them the MAC address for your new modem. That's pretty much it. Other than configuring the wifi.

How does he go wifi without wifi

Maybe I misread something.. Sounded like he wanted to not pay to rent the router he currently uses. Im referring to something like the SBG6782. Im not saying he cant buy both. Is there something else out there Im not aware of?

Modem....Router....Not modemrouter

ETA:
My issue with an "all in one" is it that..One piece craps out, you're out modem and router..
