Google's running a promo for anyone who buys their latest-gen Chromecast.

LINK /

Looks like it only applies to Chromecasts that are bought (or presumably activated) after December 13 and before January 2.

Might have to grab one now, since they're $30 at walmart and best buy right now.

If it were on Amazon, I probably would've bought one weeks ago. In which case I wouldn't be eligible for the $20 credit.

Other than the obvious dirt cheap net price, why should I get a Chromecast?

A little background info, I already have a Roku stick in my daughter's room and an Amazon Fire TV stick in my living room. I have Prime but no Netflix or Hulu. I have an iPhone and an iPad. What is the advantage of a Chromecast over the others?

None. Chromecast wouldn't be the best choice for you if Amazon Prime is a primary streaming source. They are not compatible in any acceptable way.

The only reason there are more chromecasts in my house than fire sticks is because I much prefer the navigation of Chromecast. I can use my phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop to cast to any room in the house. I don't have to be in the same room as a TV, let alone see the TV, to control content on chromecast.

It's a completely polarizing feature and is often cited as a reason people dislike it. I use it most commonly with Plex and Netflix, sometimes Youtube, and other random stuff occasionally.

and i know you hate them, but you can pick up an LG android watch for $50 and use that to also start/stop shows on the chromecast without having to even pick up your phone.

the 'photos' support is getting better but its retarded that even though your cloud videos are served via youtube (privately labelled) that they dont work like youtube app does.

when your phone screen goes off, your video stops playing as well.

stupid. i don't want to have to 'officially' move my google photo videos to youtube to enjoy them on chromecast in the same way i do other youtube video.

also if you're not using cartoon HD..you're missing the best part of chromecast.

its like netflix..only its got stuff like 'inside out' and other stuff still in theaters..

...oh and every tv show known to mankind.

also download 'localcast' and you can cast it to your chromecast seamlessly...*and* localcast supports subtitles so you even have subtitle support.

torrents are so 2000s...

I think I asked this before, but where are the CartoonHD files hosted? Is it like PopcornTime, where it's p2p and you absolutely need a VPN, or is it like Genesis?

fire stick unlocked is much better than a chromecast. I used a Chromecast for a long while and just switched to firestick and wish I had done so sooner.

It certainly does more than a Chromecast. But being able to search, browse, and cast content from any of my computing devices is just a superior interface to me. It's faster.

Fire Stick with Kodi/tvmc/whatever is nice. This CartoonHD app makes Kodi superfluous to me now, though. I only used it for movies.

i have both and actually kind of prefer the chromecast.. easy to fling my stuff to it. i fling off my phone. i mainly use watchespn and plex.

definitely more you can do with the firestick, but i don't need it.

So I got my new Chromecast, but the $20 offer isn't showing up yet. I'll give it a day or two before I contact Google (which is actually something I've never had to do before).
