BlackBerry's turnaround is happening. Seriously.

The turnaround effort began when John Chen, who was known for transforming Sybase from a money-losing basket case to a $5.8 billion takeover target for SAP, became CEO last November.
On the marketing front, BlackBerry signaled its new direction when the company hired B2B ad agency gyro earlier this month, scuttling its former ad partner BBDO, which is known for its campaigns for Snickers, Visa and M&M's, among other consumer brands.
Mark Wilson, a veteran of Avaya, joined BlackBerry in January as its senior vice-president of marketing; he replaced former chief marketing officer Frank Boulben, who departed last fall.
BlackBerry's new vision was illustrated in its first new campaign with gyro, for the new Passport phone, which was directed at professionals in healthcare:
Resurrecting the BlackBerry brand is a marketing challenge, to say the least. The company's new approach is to go after business "power pros" in industries such as healthcare, government and insurance, who need a tool, not a toy. "I think it's established that BlackBerry is the most powerful tool," says gyro CEO Christoph Becker. BlackBerry is for "anyone with big decisions to make," he adds.
BlackBerry's strategy is to sidestep a battle with Apple and Google by acknowledging that business users might also own devices from the latter companies. "They have a personal life," Glen says. "They may have an iPhone for their iTunes." When it comes to work, though, such users would use a BlackBerry. Phones and Android phones "frankly distract you from business communication," he adds.
Glen's comments echo those of Chen, who wrote in a CNBC op-ed on Oct. 2 that, "We don't expect to sell a handset to everyone and don't expect to take down the consumers who love to play games on their iPhones. But we do want to provide an experience that caters to the mobile professional –- anyone who relies on their device to do their jobs."

I bought the Z10 and had to get another phone. I said to myself, "I'm tired of being different. I just need a real smartphone."
So, I followed the fricking herd and bought a Samsung Galaxy S5. The phone is absolute shite.
NOW, the BlackBerry is picking up. FML.

I'm interested to see sales numbers on the Passport. It seems to be sold out at most places. I wonder if the momentum will continue.

I have to think everyone having a smartphone is the one thing BB can't "fix."
How many people had work-bought BBs in addition to other phones? That was definitely the case in government. I remember being 21 and being assigned one on the first day of a Congressional internship. I don't know how much that is compared to a reasonable marketshare on the consumer side, but I have to think it has been a major blow.

The apps suck, but my Z10 is the most intuitive phone I've ever had. I just want a phone and don't really care too much for apps as long as I can do the most basic of things on it, and it's been great for that. Its predictive text is the best I've ever had.
But yeah, if you want apps at all, other than business-related ones don't get a BB.

It really is. I had to get rid of mine because I needed apps. A smartphone is pretty worthless without them.
Also, the camera sucked.

Or learn how to load android apps.

There is that option; I've never bothered to learn because I'm not an app-heavy guy anyway. I side-load android apps to my Amazon FireTV so it probably isn't much more complicated but I just haven't bothered to. Are most apps compatible?

Blackberry is never coming back in it's current form. Their hold on the market was due to BES, aka security. They had companies convinced that if you let someone have an unmanaged device, you were doomed.
Companies now know better.

Can't the doctor just turn the smart phone on it's side for a wider view? Stupid ad...

Nah, he'd just grab that ginormous poster sized xray and hold it up to the light that every doctor's office/hospital already has.

ETA: not looking for all the bells and whistles. Looking to make calls, text, email, camera, internet, and that's about it.
Is this model and BB generally viewed as the best for strictly getting work done? My next phone I want the basics with things that will be needed for work (email, internet, etc).

Then you will love any BB10 phone. The hub is the best solution for messaging and the browser is the fastest mobile browser around.

Thing is, any Windows phone is at least as good for work. If wide-screen views are really that important Microsoft will produce one in short order.
Both will be competing for non-consumer dollars (which means they're fighting for third place at best) but Microsoft has a definite edge here.

Thanks, trying to get back to the days of the flip phone while still have the necessities.

I have had android phones (never a high-end device), as well as Windows phones and the Z10. The Z10 is my favorite, because it's just rock solid and easy to use. Second would definitely be any of the Windows phones that I have; they're incredibly user-friendly. But the predictive text on my Z10 is just freaky good, and even survived a washing machine bath (after I soaked the thing in isopropyl alcohol). And the hub is great and works with my multiple work inboxes as well as gmail and, as has been said, the hub is great to see everything in one screen.
