What smart door locks are people using these days? Anything with NFC so can unlock with phone?

I'm considering the Kwikset Premis. It works with Apple HomeKit and allows you to unlock via their app, HomeKit, and Siri.

This.

Check out this Link

They have different hardware that works with different platforms like Alexa, Iris, Smart Things, and Wink but they also have touchpads for entering a code.

the good old schlage BE469 is the only thing you need to know.

search on ebay and you'll find this $200 lock for half price.

schlage customer service is legendary. even if you buy a broken one on ebay they'll send you a brand new one.

Can be done through a raspberry pi running HomeBridge.

He didn't say it can't be done, he said it shouldn't be done.

What if I need just a smart/mechanical code deadbolt without a knob? Recommendations?

Yes, my wife likes the way the front door looks as it is, how'd you know?

Here we go, I need something that works like this system without changing the exterior hardware:

Scroll down to see the whole combination with keypad.

Consumer reports tested a few that I had never heard of before.

When it comes to "tech" stuff I am pretty adventurous but I do not feel comfortable with a smart lock that does not have a key like that August lock you linked.

You can still use your key. This goes on the back(inside) of the deadbolt where you would manually turn it once you entered.

As mentioned my wife is very against changing the exterior appearance of the door hardware.

One thing to be aware of is that we are still very early and some of this stuff isn't as secure as it needs to be. This article about easily hackable smart locks is from last year so hopefully they've been updated by now.

quote:

Researcher Anthony Rose, an electrical engineer, said that of 16 Bluetooth smart locks he and fellow researcher Ben Ramsey had tested, 12 locks opened when wirelessly attacked. The locks — including models made by Quicklock, iBlulock, Plantraco, Ceomate, Elecycle, Vians, Okidokey and Mesh Motion — had security vulnerabilities that ranged from ridiculously easy to moderately difficult to exploit.

...The problems didn't lie with the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol itself, Rose said, but in the way the locks implemented Bluetooth communications, or with a lock's companion smartphone app. Four locks, for example, transmitted their user passwords in plaintext to smartphones, making it easy for anyone with a $100 Bluetooth sniffer to pluck the passwords out of thin air.

More details on how the others were compromised at the LINK To me the basic problem is until this industry matures and consolidates, you're going to have these "rookie mistake" level holes. From what I've read the Schlage brand mentioned in this thread seems like a good choice.

Those are expensive and feel cheap. I do see it has a solution piece for certain applications though.

Certainly not ideal, but the logistics of my house make me feel relatively safe from this sort of attack. I have the kind of house where I'd give an award to the burglar for having the stamina to do it.

That's a negative. The August is the only one I have found so far that doesn't make me change up too much of the hardware cosmetics. Know of any others?

I like the concept but I have not found one that is double cylinder (keyed on both sides rather than a thumbturn on the inside). All my doors have windows.

Just so I'm clear, after they break the window you think the double cylinder lock will keep them out of your house?

A key on the inside of the front door sounds like a fire hazard to me

it is.

in fact i dont think this is an option anymore. at least the last time i checked, i was told for this exact reason the double-cylinder lock was no longer made.

Indeed, it will keep them from reaching in to unlock the door. In fact, that is what was always recommended in the years I worked in the home improvement industry (its how I paid for college). Now, if you have a full sized window that a guy can walk through, that’s another matter.

Nothing will keep a determined person from entering. I want to make it as difficult as possible, both to get in and to get out with my stuff.

ETA: my thinking is rooted in the 1980’s so that may be why CAD finds it so funny
