currently have an iphone 6 128GB with AT&T and pay about $90 for my plan which is 3gb data. Contract is up soon and I'm shopping around to see what's out there. would like to move up to 5gb data and have an iphone. don't care if it's verizion, sprint, tmobile, go phone, whatever. just looking for the best price. would like to keep this phone if possible but willing to trade in/sell. works fine, has cracked screen.

Ditch the iPhone (have to do this for step 2), go to Google Fi.

Simple, check TMob coverage where you are. They give you a free week. If they're good for you, go with them. It's like $35 for unlimited text/calling and 3gb data right now.

Or if you get rid of iPhone go with Google Fi.

Straight Talk or Cricket for that amount of data. You're looking at $45 for 5gb with either, except Straight Talk adds the tax on top. Both will use AT&T towers.

Single lines are usually better with MVNOs. I'd check T-Mobile coverage and see how their service is in the places that you travel. That can eliminate them and their subs or push them to the front. You can get a cheap Tmo SIM from Best Buy without even putting a plan on it, and run speedtests in the areas that you frequent. T-Mobile has been great for me, but they still lag a little behind At&t and Verizon in coverage. You're iPhone 6 should work pretty well with all carriers, although I know it's missing band 12 for T-Mobile so that could make a difference in areas with band 12 already.

I haven't had Sprint in a while, and I know they are supposed to be better, but they are still well behind the other three almost everywhere. Other considerations are whether using your phone as a hotspot is important to you, will you be using your phone internationally, do you want to be able to finance phones(can't do this through MVNOs)?

Here's an idea of some plans to look at.

At&t

Cricket: $65(with autopay) Unlimited data. Free international texting. Free North America Roaming. No mobile hotspot

Cricket: $55(with autopay) 10 GB of highspeed data. Free international texting. Free North America Roaming. Mobile hotspot is $10 extra.

Cricket: $45(with autopay) 5 GB of highspeed data. Free international texting. Free North America Roaming. Mobile hotspot is $10 extra.

Verizon

ROK mobile: $50. 5 GB of high speed data. Free premium music service with 20 million tracks. Throttle after going over is 256 kbs which is double anyone else. No hotspot.

T-Mobile

MetroPCS: $60. Unlimited data. 8 GB of mobile hotspot included. Canada and Mexico roaming $5 each.

MetroPCS: $50. 5 GB of highspeed data. Mobile hotspot included. Most music is zero-rated. Canada and Mexico roaming $5 each.

T-Mobile: $65. 6 GB of highspeed data. Almost all music and video is zero-rated. Free North America Roaming. Free international texting. Free lowspeed data in 120+ countries. Free Gogo WiFi on domestic flights.

Project fi

Uses T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular towers. $20 for unlimited talk and text and $10 per gig with cost of unused data credited back each month. Unlimited international texts. Free 256 kbs data(double T-mobile) in 135 countries. Hotspot included. Limited to Nexus devices.

Straight talk uses all of the big 4 individually, not at the same time like Project Fi. There's no cross carrier coverage with them. Since You're phone came from Verizon, I would think that you would have a good shot at getting Verizon service. However, they may still put you on Sprint especially with something like an iPhone 6 that can be used across carriers. They don't really tell you who you will be getting service through. You have to check the network when you activate. I also found this.

quote:

Which network a given TracFone, NET10 or Straight Talk phone is homed on depends on the market it's sold in. TracFone companies seem to prefer selling T-Mobile or Sprint homed phones, followed by Verizon with AT&T as a last resort. I suspect this is because they get the best deals from T-Mobile Sprint and the worst from AT&T.

That link also give some info on how to force Verizon.

You can use yours. Since yours is a Verizon phone you can almost bet you will be strictly on the Verizon network.

Straight Talk Wireless from Wal-Marks will work with your phone and it gives you unlimited everything for under $50 on a month to month and that includes all of the BS taxes. Plus you don't even need to give them your real name so you can avoid the NSA and shite. I would totally do it if I didn't already have 4 lines on Verizon.
