I bought a lenovo t410 for $200 and popped a SSD in it for grad school.
Not the prettiest thing, but works very well.

iPad Pro with a keyboard and possibly Pencil. Super lightweight and easier than a full blown laptop.
There is almost no need for a student to have a laptop especially now that most universities have gone to Office365 allowing the students to use the Word, Excel, and Powerpoint apps.
I would highly recommend he learn and use OneNote

For papers I would think a traditional laptop would be much easier.

MacBook Air with apple care. It should last him all of school.

This.
Still typing on the MacBook I bought in 2008. Lasted me through grad school and beyond with only a $40 memory upgrade to 4GB.

The guy said affordable. Not everyone can afford a $1000+ laptop. Plus just about any laptop you buy new should be expected to last 4 years of school at least. I bought a Sony Vaio for $500 in 2011 when I started college, and it was great until Windows 10 screwed it up a couple months ago. It's still functional, but it's not the same. But hey I got 5 years out of it and I didn't have to justify spending MacBook money on a piece of equipment that can easily break or be stolen when walking around on campus all day for four years
OP, wait for sales on good laptops on newegg.com. I've found a few laptops I've nearly pulled the trigger on in the past couple months, seems like every time I look they have a good laptop for under $500. I'd recommend finding something with a small SSD and good battery life and ignore fancy but unnecessary perks like 360 screens and touch screens. An SSD and good battery life will help a laptop last much longer while touch screen and other perks are just things that will cost you more money and make it more likely to break
Edit: and make sure you get him a good case and make him use it. For whatever reason everyone my age doesn't take care of their shite and I've seen a lot of beaten up MacBooks from people not using cases and putting down their backpacks hard or dropping the laptop when carrying it

Don't they have computer labs still? Is this a requirement by the university?
Go to BestBuy Outlet or Dell Outlet and get the best mid-level laptop you can find. You can check on Slickdeals for deals as well. Weight may not be as big of a factor as it used to be, but ask if he'll be lugging books and notebooks around in addition to the laptop or if it's just going to sit in the dorm.

No he did not. He said best bang for buck. I still use a 7 year old MacBook Air that runs great. You get what you pay for.
OP: The best bang for buck laptop you can buy your son is the 12" MacBook (not Air). Apple just released a 2nd generation of this laptop a few days ago. Just get the 1st gen refurbished from Apple. It costs about $950 and will last your son 4 years. It is less than 2 lbs, extremely portable and has a great trackpad and screen. He will love it.

Another to add, and it may not last 4 years, is the new ASUS vivobook E403SA. It's basically a Macbook ripoff, but it's 400 bucks and would probably fulfill most needs. Plus it looks exceptional for a low budget laptop.
