Apple's New iPhone Payment Plan: $36/mo, New Phone Every Year

For the person (ME) who wants a new phone every year, Apple has developed a new way to suck the money from your wallet. For $438.96 per year, forever, you can have the latest & greatest 64 GB iPhone. Unlocked, and with Apple Care included.
On its face it seems like a bad deal. But I'm intrigued that it's unlocked.
Every carrier is phasing out 2 year contract subsidized phone prices. AT&T's new scheme is more complex than others (a monthly "discount" of $25/phone for being on a Next plan), but they all seem like equal ripoffs. The closest comparison I can find through AT&T is $37.50/month for 20 months with upgrade eligibility after a year (so I'm paying for a phone I no longer have?).
Back in the day (2014) a 64GB iphone 6 with AppleCare would run you $399 plus a 2 year contract.
My question is: what's the best way to buy a phone these days?

Considering that's about what the carriers will charge anyway, plus you get applecare with it, I'll probably plan on switching to that after my last 2 year is up on my 6+

Get something like a Nexus device or Moto phone. They are around 400 unlocked. With the subsidized planes getting phased out, I believe the cheaper unlocked phones will start to be very popular. Flagship phones will have to be cheaper to compete.

You either pay the balance of the phone and you keep it, or you turn in your "old" phone to AT&T and the payments stop for that phone and start fresh with the new phone that you upgrade to.

With AT&T, don't you get a monthly "discount" with the NEXT plan. Wouldn't that go away?

Just save and buy an unsubsidized phone.

You get the discount if you bring your own phone too.

Discounted access charge: Access charges for smartphone lines on No Annual Service Contracts (AT&T Next, bring your own, pay full price, or month-to-month) are discounted up to $25 per month when compared to smartphone lines on new 2-year contracts. Savings will be $15 or $25 per smartphone line based on your plan. Customers with smartphones on 2-year contracts that started in or prior to March 2014 may also be eligible for these savings.

Then if people want phones year over year, apple seems to be the better choice

I considered going that route, but now you're looking at $850 for the same phone with AppleCare. And in order to get a new one next year you have to sell your current one. Craigslist is the cheapest way, but you have to deal with all the bullshite that entails.

What about Verizon? Are you required to bring old phone?

You can get a yearly upgrade with AT&T next too if you go for a 20 month plan rather than a 24 month plan. On a $650 phone that's $32.50 per month. So if you went through Apple instead it's like getting AppleCare+ free.

I don't have Verizon so I don't really know about their plans, but they are going away from the subsidized contract phones too, so I imagine they have to have something similar.

I wonder how the data works on these plans or if it's just an "add on". I.E. I pay $80 a month for unlimited everything with TMo and an extra 32 a month for apple care and new iPhone every year?

I'm on the Verizon Edge program and am technically up for an update this coming month. My phone won't be paid off though, so does anyone know if I'd be able to upgrade through Apple? Or will I have to upgrade through VW until the phone is fully paid for?
I'd much rather go through directly though apple and get the AppleCare for free.

My impression is it's basically a payment plan through Apple. You wouldn't coordinate anything with the carrier. It'd basically be the same as if you went to Verizon and said hey I want this plan but already have my own paid for phone.

Apple still makes a lot of money going through the carriers, I doubt they'd do a "buy through Apple and we'll pay off your other phone" deal. How much do you owe? You might be able to pay your phone off by selling it.

I wasn't sure since I'd still be returning the phone to VW and I wouldn't be switching carriers

Retarded deal. Iphones have great resale value.
Buy for $750. Sell for $500.
Wonder how many sheep will be herded blindly with this scheme

This was my first thought as well.
