My Dad got me Apple TV for my birthday - wasn't asking for it but it was a nice surprise. I was thinking about returning it for Apple store credit and waiting for the new version to come out later this fall.

What say you?

I've been waiting for a long time. The last time they actually upgraded it was March 2012. That was basically a chip bump to move up to 1080p from 720p. Last time before that was September 2010. I thought they were going to refresh finally in March, but it was just a drop in price. I don't think they are going to get it out my the holiday shopping season. iPhones are supposed to be in a week or two. October will be iPads (new iPad Pro?). I doubt they are rolling out updates for everything AND update a product that is 3 years old a month or two before Christmas shopping starts. They may announce it before the holidays, but I would think early next year around the apple watch refresh. The other point is the $69 store credit is only going to help so much on a new one. They might not even be in the same range depending on how much they add. It could be a smart home hub, gaming center, etc. and could easily climb in price from $69.

TL;DR:
Just enjoy your Apple TV or return it to Best Buy and get a Roku 3, so that you can justify paying paying for a new Apple TV when it comes out. (I have all Apple stuff except I am waiting for the second watch version, but I have a Roku along with my Apple TV and enjoy it slightly more.)

This. Roku 3 is far superior to the current Apple tv.

I say if you can wait 'til Sep 9th, do so! That's when Apple is supposed to reveal the next Apple TV, which is supposed to have an app store and be the basis for their TV bundle next year. Gamechanger.

What's your source, Spock? There was a lot more buzz for this past March to be an update than September 9th. I hope I'm wrong about it being a earlier next year update.

Basically all the Interwebs for the last few weeks. Here's one example.

Apple TV - New set-top box to be unveiled September 9.

I have a roku 3, fire box, and chromecast. Roku is easily my favorite UI. I can fly through the apps and shows with the minimalist remote.

I have also been waiting for an updated apple TV with app store for quite a while. I assume someone will make an app that lets the apple tv stream lossless files bitperfect direct from itunes which I would like for my main system. If it does not allow for that I think I will use another Roku.

In the article you linked, the link that states September is one of their articles that has two links in it from them stating the release to happen earlier this year. MacRumors track record for new releases sucks, except for the obvious ones like new iPhone in September. Anytime someone says new Apple product they repeat it. I just remember reading about it a whole lot more about a release this past May than I am now.

Just saying I'm not holding my breath or planning on not using an Apple TV to be able to return it, but I'll be excited whenever they do update it.

Actually, it was known sometime in advance that the Apple TV was not going to be unveiled at the WWDC, despite earlier rumors that it would be. As for MacRumors, like I said, "Basically all the Interwebs for the last few weeks. Here's one example." I can also add CNBC to the list. Unlike WWDC, it would be a big surprise for the new Apple TV not to debut Sep 9th.
