They've brought in some of the bigger draws in the world of podcasting to talk about the issues with iTunes and the future of the Format, including how to help folks monetize the genre.

Interesting to see, and I wonder if they're looking at doing this as a part of the broader iTunes/Apple Music revamp? They partitioned Podcasts into its own separate App so I'm wondering if the issue is Monetization and how to make search and interactivity better whether they may be brining them back under the iTunes/Apple Music tent pole.

Do people with iPhones really use iTunes for podcasts? I thought ever used a better scrubber like Pocket Casts.

I download my podcasts straight from iTunes and play through the app.....there's really nothing I think that can make the experience any better for me.

Same here, I'd actually be interested in hearing some of the benefits of downloading a new one. I can't imagine it being any easier.

I hope Apple doesn't go and screw up a good thing. I'm certainly not going to start paying to listen to a podcast

I'm sure they'll come up with some sort of revenue sharing service where they insert adds into your podcast. Of course, they'll take 30 percent of the revenue on the back of your creativity.

Don't get me wrong, I understand they bring value in that scenario, but their cut of the money has always been steep.

How is that possible? There's probably some early adopter/smart home focused podcast out there that'd you'd love. There might even be a "On clearance at Home Depot this week" podcast, and if there isn't you can start one.

download a podcast app. Go to the directory inside the app, see something you like or search any subject, hit subscribe. They're just audio files (mainly .mp3).

You're missing out. There is so much quality content out there right now it's unbelievable. I hardly listen to music on my phone anymore because I'd rather listen to a podcast.

I used iTunes back when I only had an iPod and I believe when Podcasts were still in the music app on the iPhone. Once Instacast came out that's what I started using, then switched to Overcast when it launched.

ETA: I don't have a link or anything, but from the sounds of it, close to 70% of all podcasts listened to go through iTunes.

really??

Because I freaking love my music. Sell me on this.

I just assumed podcasts were a bunch of morons with blog sites that sat down and recorded themselves talking and posted a stupid link to the audio file.

What's the difference between a podcast and say an audio book?

What is this great content I'm missing?

Hardcore History and Common Sense for starters.

I used to listen to nothing but music. Ever since I got a smartphone (2007) though I'd say 99% of the time I'm listening to something it's a podcast.

That's a bold statement. When I get in my car today I'm cranking up major lazer 'too original' and let Elliphant entertain me with her vocals.

I'm not sure why is want to listen to a history lesson instead. What makes a podcast interesting enough to listen to someone talking?

I haven't, either. I would much rather read than listen to someone talk. It's faster, I can scan over parts I'm not interested in, quickly re-read parts I didn't quite catch. Audio is too linear, and it's clumsy to skip around like that.

It's not nearly as amateur hour as you're thinking. You can find amateurish podcasts for sure, but the most popular ones are easily the same quality as any nationally syndicated radio show. And just like any talk show, the guests are almost as important as the hosts. I just googled Smart Home Podcasts and the first result was this. LINK / Their most recent podcast had an interview with the guy that started the Ring doorbell. They've had reports from various tradeshows. There was an interview with the head of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group on where Bluetooth is headed. It's definitely not just some random guy talking about his own smart home set up each week like a youtube how to video. And I'm just throwing Smart Home out there because I know it's one of your areas of interest, there's a podcast for pretty much anything.
