One thousand, five hundred and fourteen days. Or: four years, one month, and twenty-four days.

That’s how long it’s been since Apple released the last MacBook Pro to come without a Retina display. The $1,199 13-inch model was powered by a 2.5GHz Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor, a solid option for a midrange laptop in June 2012. I got one that month and am actually typing this column on it right now, having performed open hard drive surgery last night to bring it back from the dead.

Nothing unusual about that, of course — technology moves on. Except it’s now August 2016, and Apple is inexplicably still selling the exact same laptop.

quote:

The Retina MacBook Pro is 442 days into its current cycle, despite refreshes coming every 268 days on average in the past. The Mac mini has gone 657 days since its last update, which was controversial in itself since Apple removed quad-core options and made the product harder to upgrade after purchase. And the Mac Pro, released in December 2013 following much "Can’t innovate any more, my arse"-fueled fanfare? It hasn’t received a single update since then. "This is without a doubt the future of the pro desktop," Phil Schiller said when announcing the Mac Pro on stage that year. Did he mean that this was the precise model Apple expects professional users to use literally forever?

I thought I'd read that they finally retired that thing. Really, the most egregious part of it is the mechanical hard drive. Otherwise, for what most people do with a PC, it would feel just as fast as every other MacBook Pro with an SSD... maybe add another 4GB of RAM. But for $1099, it's the worst computer you can buy.

If people are still buying them, what business sense does it make to "stop selling four-year-old computers?"

In the eyes of the public, they should. In the eyes of their investors, they should do everything they can to make money.

and here I thought you were going to post an actual opinion you held yourself.

This has been a maddening release cycle by Apple, no doubt. It has been almost a year since I posted the Skylake Anticipation Thread thinking new MacBook Pros were 2-3 months away. Yet, here I am still chugging along on my 2011 MacBook Air. Honestly, this computer could last me until the SSD goes kaput, but I want to upgrade. I want that retina screen. But I sure as hell am not going to replace it with a $2,000 computer that is 443 days old. This is part Intel's fault with their CPU delays. But the onus is strictly Apple's for trying to stick to a schedule in the volatile tech market. They should be releasing new Macs AS SOON as the new appropriate chipsets become available regardless of how recently they had they're previous update. These are consumer and professional electronics, not industrial equipment that can run for 60 years without replacement.

That said, I expect the entire line up (sans the MacBook) to have new models out in October.

I for the life of me can't figure out how Apple brainwashed half the country into thinking they should pay double the price for the same exact internals everyone else is selling.

- Better customer service and support
No need to call someone halfway across the world to get guidance on your machine/software

- Less chance of malware.
Not saying that macOS is bulletproof, but there is little to no risk of getting malware or viruses on your machine

- The concept of an ecosystem.
People prefer that all of their devices work together. What better way to ensure that than to have them all be made by the same company?

It's not a difficult business model to figure out.

Could Apple be ready to drop a bombshell and say they are moving their entire Mac lineup to their A-series processors and kick Intel to the curb? Could that be the reason for this inexplicable delay in updating the MacBooks? You know they have done it once going from PPC to Intel, maybe they plan on doing it again?

You're right. Apple has no ecosystem whatsoever.

In what way exactly? I can see all of my files on my PC or on my Android phone.

I can access my Spotify, Pandora, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, insert streaming service here, from my PC or my Android phone.

If I'm being honest, an ecosystem that literally anyone can set up and use.

I'm not saying Apple invented the concept of an ecosystem, or even that they have the best ecosystem, but they have one that has a nearly consistent UI and experience across the board.

Maybe so, I don't know b/c I've always built my own machines and the internet is a very fine support system when I do need help.

I've been running Windows for 20 years and have had exactly one malware incident. Since I had a robust backup in place I just did a restore.

Um ... Google has had that for awhile now. Windows 10 got Microsoft in that arena as well.

Yep, it's called milking a cash cow and it's a good business practice as long as the sales keep rolling in. Our family tends to hold on to things until it's no longer practical to keep repairing them. We build our own computers and repair/upgrade as needed. As such, we are happy for technology to remain stable for a reasonable period.
