My wife wants to start using her laptop again for work purposes. We got it out of a box, turned it on for the first time in a few years, and this thing is in pretty good condition but extremely slow. Like takes 5 minutes to open a folder slow.
I know absolutely nothing about macs so what would be the best way to get this thing going again?
macbook pro 2007ish
Mac OS X
Ver 10.5.8
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM
I tried to do a software update but it said it is up to date. How in the hell is that possible?
Appreciate the help

The OS is several editions old and no longer receiving updates. Let her use it and see if it works well. If it does, you're done. If it doesn't, upgrade the RAM.
If that gives unsatisfactory results in "speed," I would actually probably buy a Snow Leopard DVD online and an SSD. It will work very well with that for a while, but RAM is cheaper and an easier fix.

What's the model number? From a quick search it looks like yours is either an early or late 2006 model. The earlier model can be upgraded to 10.6 and the late model can be upgraded to 10.7. It looks like 10.6.8 is the best version for older machines. Since you don't have the Mac App Store you'll need a 10.6 disc to get to 10.6.8. If you don't want to buy a disc you can download a torrent and make a bootable drive to install it.

I am definitely going to have to update the RAM. I will give it a shot and if it doesn't help, I will try Snow Leopard.
Amazon has Snow Leopard 10.6.3. Will her computer be able to handle that update?

1/ Reboot while holding down COMMAND-S to
2/ Wait for the shell startup to finish. When it is complete you will get a prompt where you can give a command
3/ type fsck -fy and hit return
4/ It will look at the system, file-structure, etc... and make any repairs.
If it says repairs were made then run it again until no repairs were made

Other option-
If she hasn't used the laptop in a long time maybe you should just create a new user account for her and delete the old one.
Also, check the user account (apple menu-> System Preferences-> Users) and see what background apps are booted on login. Most of the time there are a few resource hogs there.

I'll check it out.
Also, the version is a Macbook 2,1

I run Snow Leopard on a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo (T7600 I believe) MacBook from mid-2007 on 2GB RAM and a 5400rmp SATA drive. Check the RAM requirements, but it will run Snow Leopard well. Lion is the version that started to get a bit more hardware intensive. While officially supported, hanging out on either the current Leopard or Snow Leopard will probably be the better option, assuming she has support for the programs she needs in those older versions of the OS.

Literally the best thing you can do for speed is to add an SSD. I replaced mine in the same model 2 years ago and it screamed. Finally bit the dust after the LCD went out
