was trying to export some pictures from my Photos app on a macbook and it got through 124 of the 125 and then froze for a couple of hours. So i tried to restart the computer and now all the pictures are not on my computer or phone or cloud.

Any idea on how to recover? unfortunately for me, these were the "favorites" folder pictures, so the wife might not be too happy about this.

Never restart or shut down when in the middle of something like that. I would have let it go overnight to see if it unfreezes and finishes up. Then if it's still frozen restart. You likely lost those pics unfortunately.

how is that possible? apple

why wouldnt it just restart any corrupt image transfers not sync'd to the cloud?

google photos never actually removes photos from your device, it just creates a copy online. no sync process should ever be harmful to your local copy.

what am i missing?

Where were the pictures stored to begin with? Your description sounds like they were already stored in the cloud and you were 'exporting' from Photos.

Can you view them on other devices? What about when you go to iCloud.com?

again, how can any process to 'down' or 'up' photos to a cloud account possibly result in deletions?

makes no sense whatsoever unless you were trying to REMOVE them from your hard drive or the cloud..which also makes no sense unless you're moving them to a different cloud service.

something doesn't add up.

That's what I'm saying. The pictures don't just disappear if you have the settings correct. This is Apple we are talking about, not Joe the IT guy hosting your pics on a server in his garage.

So I went back through my pictures and realized that they are all still there, just no longer marked as favorites and the favorites folder is gone.

minor inconvenience to re-favorite those since my wife was marking them for a photo book, but glad they aren't lost forever.

My only thought is that there is a setting to store the original resolution sized photo in the cloud and replace the file on your devices with a thumbnail or other lower resolution photo to conserve space locally. When you click to view it, the full-size photo automatically downloads.

Therefore there really should be a version of his photo somewhere. My only thought is that hid download trigger some sort of re-write sequence that then deleted or corrupted when he restarted without finishing. Nevertheless, there should be a full version on icloud, and my suggestion to the OP would be to contact Apple.
